Title: Resurrection of Jesus

1
Resurrection of Jesus
2
Resurrection
  • (i) First, the word resurrection most often
refers to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • (ii) Resurrection is also used to refer to the
miracle of returning someone from the dead back
to life on earth. In the Old Testament, this
    happened when
  • 1. Elijah raised a boy (1 Kings 178-24)
  • 2. Elisha raised the Shunammites son (2 Kings
    418-37).
  • In the New Testament there are a few more
    examples
  • 1. Jesus raised Jairuss daughter (Mark 535-43)
  • 2. Jesus raised Lazarus (John 1117-44)
  • 3. Peter raised Dorcas (Acts 936-42)
  • 4. Paul raised Eutychus (Acts 209-12).
  • Even though these people were raised from the
dead, they still died at some later time.
  • (iii) Finally, resurrection also refers to the
end of time when all people will be resurrected
to be punished or rewarded based on their belief
in Jesus Christ (John 529 and Revelation
    205-6).

  • Various of the names found in the tomb on these
ossuaries do not match up with the Holy Family
names at all--- for example the names Matthew and
    Martha.
  • Joseph died early in Galilee (Mk 6, Jesus is "son
of Mary" and Joe is not mentioned). Was he
    exhumed and moved to Jerusalem?

5
Pauls view
  • The Resurrection was so important for Paul that
he said without it there was no reason to preach
or have faith. He wrote that a Christian religion
without the Resurrection would be empty and
meaningless (1 Corinthians 1512-19). For Paul,
the Resurrection was the great unveiling of Gods
    power in Jesus (Romans 14).

6
Peter, John Luke
  • Peter wrote that the Resurrection allowed people
to have a new and living hope (1 Peter 13).
  • John wrote that Jesus resurrection was the
foundation for witness and fellowship with God (1
    John 11-4).
  • In the book of Acts, the Resurrection is
presented as the main reason for ministry and
    preaching the Gospel (Acts 121-25).

7
After the resurrection
  • A person like Paul, who had persecuted
Christians, became a zealous apostle (Acts 91-22
    and 1 Corinthians).
  • A fearful fisherman like Peter abandoned his nets
to preach the gospel (John 21).
  • A doubter like Thomas confessed that even he
believed, calling Jesus my Lord and my God
    (2024-28).
  • And two weary travelers to Emmaus found the
energy to return quickly to Jerusalem and share
the news about their encounter with the risen
    Jesus (Luke 2413-35).

8
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CHRISTS RESURRECTION
  • In the Bible, several people were raised from the
dead a widows son by Elijah, another widows
son and Lazarus by Jesus. However, these
resurrections do not hold the same importance
that Christs resurrection does. These people
rose from the dead only to eventually die again.
  • Jesus rose to live forever. When these people
rose they were still doomed because of their
sinfulness and disobedience to God. Jesus rose as
the incorruptible and perfect Son of God.
  • These people rose with no change in their bodily
form. Jesus rose in a significantly different
    form.

  • After the Resurrection, Jesus was not limited by
earthly ideas of time and space.
  • In the early morning of the day of his
resurrection, Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene in
the garden (John 2011-17). Jesus then appeared
to another group of women (Matthew 289). After
this, he went to be with God (John 2017). Then,
he returned to appear to Peter, who had gone home
(2010 and Luke 2434). On the same day, in the
late afternoon, he took a seven-mile walk with
two disciples on their way to Emmaus (2413-33).
After this, Jesus appeared to the disciples while
they were assembled in a closed room somewhere in
Jerusalem (Luke 2433-48 and John 2019-23). What
Jesus did after his Resurrection was impossible
for human beings. As the life-giving spirit
with a glorified body, Jesus was no longer
    limited by time and space.
