1
The Power of Surrender

2
John 1010
  • "The thief comes only to steal and kill and
destroy I came that they may have life, and have
    it abundantly. NASB
  • The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and
destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and
    satisfying life. NLT

3
Romans 831-39
  • What shall we say about such wonderful things as
these? If God is for us, who can ever be against
    us?
  • 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but
gave him up for us all, won't he also give us
    everything else?

4
  • 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for
his own? No onefor God himself has given us
right standing with himself. 34 Who then will
condemn us? No onefor Christ Jesus died for us
and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting
in the place of honor at God's right hand,
    pleading for us.

5
  • 35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ's
love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we
have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or
hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened
    with death? 36
  • 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming
victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

6
  • 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever
separate us from God's love. Neither death nor
life, neither angels nor demons, neither our
fears for today nor our worries about
tomorrownot even the powers of hell can separate
    us from God's love.
  • 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth
belowindeed, nothing in all creation will ever
be able to separate us from the love of God that
is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

7
Hebrews 116 NLT
  • And it is impossible to please God without faith.
Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that
God exists and that he rewards those who
    sincerely seek him.

8
Hebrews 414-16
  • So then, since we have a great High Priest who
has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us
hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High
Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he
faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did
    not sin.
  • 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our
gracious God. There we will receive his mercy,
and we will find grace to help us when we need it
    most.

9
  • Lt. Dan Now, you listen to me. We all have a
destiny. Nothing just happens, it's all part of a
plan. I should have died out there with my men!
But now, I'm nothing but a ________cripple! A
legless freak. Look! Look! Look at me! Do you see
that? Do you know what it's like not to be able
    to use your legs?
  • Forrest Well... Yes, sir, I do.
  • Lt. Dan Did you hear what I said? You cheated
me. I had a destiny. I was supposed to die in the
field! With honor! That was my destiny! And you
cheated me out of it! You understand what I'm
saying, Gump? This wasn't supposed to happen. Not
to me. I had a destiny. I was Lt Dan Tyler.
  • Forrest Yo-You're still Lieutenant Dan.

10
  • Lt. Dan Have you found Jesus yet, Gump?
  • Forrest I didn't know I was supposed to be
    looking for him, sir.
  • Lt. Dan That's all these cripples, down at the
V.A., that's all they ever talk about. Jesus this
and Jesus that. Have I found Jesus? They even had
a priest come and talk to me. He said God is
listening, but I have to help myself. Now, if I
accept Jesus into my heart, I'll get to walk
beside him in the Kingdom of Heaven. Did you hear
what I said? Walk beside him in the Kingdom of
Heaven. Well, kiss my crippled ass. God is
listening. What a crock of ...

11
  • Lieutenant Daniel Taylor Where the Hell is this
God of yours? Forrest Gump narrating It's
funny Lieutenant Dan said that, 'cause right
    then, God showed up.

12
Lieutenant Dan Curses God
13
  • Forrest Gump You died on a Saturday morning. And
I had you placed here under our treeJenny, I
don't know if Momma was right or if, if it's
Lieutenant Dan. I don't know if we each have a
destiny, or if we're all just floating around
    accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe
it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same
time. I miss you, Jenny. If there's anything you
need, I won't be far away.

    hope, etc.).
  • 5. to yield or resign (an office, privilege,
    etc.) in favor of another.
  • 6. to give oneself up, as into the power of
    another submit or yield.

16
Surrender Can Be a Positive Thing!
  • Is It Really a Negative Thing?

17
Children Must learn to Surrender
18
Hebrews 127-11
  • As you endure this divine discipline, remember
that God is treating you as his own children. Who
ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by
its father? 8 If God doesn't discipline you as he
does all of his children, it means that you are
illegitimate and are not really his children at
    all.
  • 9 Since we respected our earthly fathers who
disciplined us, shouldn't we submit even more to
the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and
    live forever?

19
  • 10 For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a
few years, doing the best they knew how. But
God's discipline is always good for us, so that
we might share in his holiness. 11 No discipline
is enjoyable while it is happeningit's painful!
But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of
right living for those who are trained in this
    way.

20
  • 6 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for
this is right. 2 "Honor your father and
mother"-which is the first commandment with a
promise 3 "that it may go well with you and that
you may enjoy long life on the earth."
  • 4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children
instead, bring them up in the training and
    instruction of the Lord.

21
A great and Long life
22
Ephesians 65-9
  • 5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect
and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as
you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to
win their favor when their eye is on you, but
like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from
    your heart.
  • 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving
the Lord, not men, 8 because you know that the
Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he
does, whether he is slave or free.
  • 9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way.
Do not threaten them, since you know that he who
is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and
there is no favoritism with him.

23
Wives Submit?!
  • Eph 521-28 NIV
  • 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for
    Christ.
  • 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife as
Christ is the head of the church, his body, of
which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church
submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to
    their husbands in everything.

24
Husbands Love!
  • 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ
loved the church and gave himself up for her 26
to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing
with water through the word, 27 and to present
her to himself as a radiant church, without stain
or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and
    blameless.
  • 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their
wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife
    loves himself.

25
Submit to Your Pastors?
  • Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they
keep watch over your souls as those who will give
an account. Let them do this with joy and not
with grief, for this would be unprofitable for
    you.
  • Hebrews 1317

26
Its Not Unusual to Submit
  • Players submit to their coaches
  • Musicians submit to their conductors
  • Soldiers submit to their commanders

27
Even Jesus Surrendered
28
Luke 2241-46
  • And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw,
and He knelt down and began to pray, saying,
"Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from
Me yet not My will, but Yours be done."
  • Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him,
strengthening Him. And being in agony He was
praying very fervently and His sweat became like
drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.

29
So Why Wont We Surrender to God?
  • And it is impossible to please God without faith.
Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that
God exists and that he rewards those who
    sincerely seek him.
  • Hebrews 116

30
Does God Really Love Us?
  • "For God loved the world so much that he gave his
one and only Son, so that everyone who believes
in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17
God sent his Son into the world not to judge the
world, but to save the world through him.
  • John 316-17

31
Does God Really Understand?
  • For we do not have a high priest who cannot
sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has
been tempted in all things as we are, yet without
    sin.
  • Therefore let us draw near with confidence to
the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy
and find grace to help in time of need.
  • Hebrews 415-16

32
He made this world to Bless You!
  • Food
  • Drinks like Starbucks, shakes, wine, beer?
  • Flowers everywhere even on Mountaintops
  • Animals in all their craziness
  • Oceans, mountains, forests, rivers
  • Sex and all the feelings with it
  • Rock N Roll, music in every form

33
Romans 831-39
  • What shall we say about such wonderful things as

  • 35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ's
love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we
have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or
hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened

  • 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming
victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

36
James 47-10
  • So humble yourselves before God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to
God, and God will come close to you. Wash your
hands, you sinners purify your hearts, for your
loyalty is divided between God and the world. 9
Let there be tears for what you have done. Let
there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be
sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of
joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he
will lift you up in honor.
