The written test was held on September 17, 2006.
Five years and one week after 9/11, there would
be a lot of talented Police Officers and
Inspectors at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
The Chief authorized a sweep of the facility by
the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit.
3
The K-9 Unit with the specially trained sniffer
dogs.
4
Two minutes were allowed for each of 63 questions
in the first part of the test We created a DVD
which prompted the candidates Stop, turn to
Page 2, Purple. A computer ran the same movie as
a back-up in case the DVD failed.
5
Turns out there was a rave the weekend before, so
we inherited a pretty elaborate sound system.
Fortunately the speakers on the bottom of the
stack could be turned off.
6
Jaye Erickson provides training to the proctors
from CPS. Jaye has been working on the Q-50
examination full time for the last eight months.
The examination has not been given for five years.
7
Thanks to our friends at 875 Stevenson for the
terrific job copying and binding the three test
booklets. The room was divided up into 24
sections and each was assigned to a proctor.
8
642 candidates take Section A of the examination.
The podium is visible on the stage at the front
of the hall. Candidates were admitted at 100pm,
but we were there to set up at 700am. Twelve
hours later the test was complete.
9
Over 600 candidates were invited to participate
in the oral exercise. Raters were flown in from
around the country to serve on 24 oral panels.
Here, candidates wait in the lobby at the Holiday
Inn at Fishermans Wharf.
10
Candidates register prior to entering the
orientation session.
11
Saru Cownan prepares to start the orientation.
Candidates viewed a DVD with standardized
instructions and a visual depiction of the oral
exercise.
12
Jay Erickson routes candidates to the interview
rooms.
13
Candidates wait for instructions to enter the
interview rooms.
14
Candidates knock on the interview rooms to be
admitted and start their exercise. 549
candidates (90 of those invited) participated in
the oral exercise.
15
A proctor plays the role of a candidate
participating in the first part of the exercise.
The candidate interviews a citizen regarding
her experience with an officer. In the second
part, the candidate interviews the officer (the
second rater seated in the back of the room.)
16
Joron Coleman and our intern Joni Kuroyama enter
ratings into a laptop during the test. Over
4,000 ratings were entered and double-checked on
the spot. A quality check the following week
found on one data entry error.
