SAPHE Objectives
  • Develop next generation of body worn miniature
physiological sensors and to test them with
    people under real life conditions.
  • Combine these sensors with other environmental
and activity monitoring sensors to create the
    SAPHE system
  • Trial SAPHE to assess the effect of the
technology on the user and their informal carers
and to assess how their professional carers
(Community Matrons) can use the information
provided to help them manage the persons care
    more effectively.

3
SAPHE Consortium
  • The SAPHE project is a three year project funded
by Technology Strategy Board and Department of
Health in the United Kingdom . The project
    partners include
  • Imperial College London,
  • Liverpool PCT,
  • University of Dundee,
  • BT,
  • Philips,
  • Cardionetics,
  • Docobo and
  • Smart Solutions Research Consultants.

4
Approach
  • SAPHE is seeking to determine the value of
    providing certain wellbeing related information
to the professional carer (Community Matron) of
people with long term conditions within the
    Community.
  • SAPHE is complimentary to existing care delivery
  • An additional information source for patient
    assessment
  • Providing a continuous insight to patient
    behaviour and wellbeing
  • Shows what has happened and trends over time
  • Abnormal behaviour or measured parameters may
    be highlighted
  • No alerts
  • No diagnosis

5
The SAPHE System
  • The SAPHE system comprises
  • A package of sensors installed in the home linked
via wireless network to a hub device.
  • The hub then transmits the data from the sensors
to a server where it is collated and transmitted
to a PC in the office of the professional carer

Information to Community Matrons
  • Activity
  • What has happened in the last 24 hours?
  • How does it compare to normal?
  • How does it compare to recent days?
  • What are the longer term trends?
  • Physiology
  • Are parameters within normal bounds?
  • Are there any step changes?
  • Are there any longer term trends?
  • Ability to correlate physiology with
    activity/behaviour

8
Information access web based portal
  • Access in and outside the office as part of
    existing caseload review process
  • Mobile access to respond calls whilst on rounds
    and use during patient visits
