Student Responsibilities
  • 1. Read and study the science activity or lab
    investigation before starting.
  • a. ask questions if needed
  • b. be aware of hazards and take
  • precautions
  • c. understand the concept and
  • proceed

  • 2. Know and follow all safety rules prior to
    the investigation.
  • Read, sign, and understand the safety
    contract.
  • Wear appropriate protective equipment.
  • Tie back long hair.
  • Tie back or remove clothing or jewelry that
    could touch flames or chemicals.
  • Wear shoes that enclose the feet.
  • Never eat or drink anything in the lab.
  • Locate and know how to use safety equipment.
  • Know where and how to exit the lab if needed.
  • Wear splash proof goggles until lab is
    completely over.

  • 3. Be alert. Watch for potential problems and
    report anything unsafe to the teacher.
  • 4. Do not try your own experiments. Only do the
    activities your teacher said to do.
  • 5. If a chemical spills, report it and follow the
    teachers instruction

    properly. Recycle if possible.

  • 8. Always wash your hands for at least 20
    seconds with soap and warm water before leaving
    the lab.

Safety Training for Students
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Many materials in the lab can cause eye injury.
    Protect yourself from injury by wearing the
    splash proof safety goggles. State law requires
    that we wear them if possible injury to the eye
    is present. The teacher will decide if these are
    necessary.

General Lab Rules
  • 1. Read all directions before a lab. Be alert
    in the lab and listen for teacher directions.
    Ask questions if you do not understand.
  • 2. Never perform activities not okayed by the
    teacher.
  • 3. Do not handle equipment without permission.
  • 4. Take extra precautions when handling
    chemicals. Never pour chemicals into the sink or
    trash. If a spill occurs, notify the teacher.
  • 5. Never eat or drink in the lab. Never drink
    from lab containers.
  • 6. There should never be loud talking or playing
    in the lab.
  • 7. Handle cutting instruments carefully. Never
    cut material toward you.
  • 8. When you have completed an investigation,
    clean up your work area and return equipment and
    supplies to their proper place.

  • 9. Wash your hands with soap and warm water
    after every investigation.
  • 10. Turn off all burners before leaving lab.
  • 11. Know the location of all safety equipment
  • fire extinguishers, eye/face wash station,
    safety shower, fire blankets, chemical spill kits
  • 12. Never work in the lab alone or unattended.
  • 13. Do not enter supply or storage closets
    without a teacher present or without a teachers
    permission.
