Background

• Only by making great personal sacrifices can Jim
  and Della afford to buy special Christmas gifts
  for each other. Ironically, because both
  sacrifice what they most treasure, neither can
  use the gift from the other. They do give and
  receive the gift of love and that, the narrator
  implies, is the greatest gift of all.

• Write a tribute (note showing respect/gratitude)
  to Jim and Della in which you honor the heartfelt
  way they solved their Christmastime dilemma.

• Summary of sacrifice
• The effect their sacrifices have on each other
• Your opinion on whether such sacrifices are a
  necessary component of a relationship (tell why).
• Do you think their tale could be an inspiration
  for others or whether it is private and cannot
  apply to the lives of others (explain your
  answer)?

• Dear Jim and Della,
• You two have sacrificed far beyond what
• anyone would expect from any married couple.
• Jim, the way you sold your chain to buy Della
• hair combs. Della, the way you sold your hair to
  buy
• Jim a chain for his watch. Sacrifices are a
  necessary part
• of any relationship because it shows how much a
  couple
• truly loves each other. This is truly an
  inspiration to others
• because it could make other couples see how
  important their
• relationship is. I dont know if I would have
  done the same thing,
• though. You both sacrificed something sacred,
  and I dont know
• if I would be willing to do the same.
