Title: Blazing Trails

1
Blazing Trails
  • Project Proposal
  • Brad Poirier, Bryce Everist, Colin Gillis, Justin
    Clifton, Shoneth MacInnis

2
Problem
  • The trail system in Antigonish is poorly
    developed
  • Obesity is at an all-time high and the need for
    exercise is on the rise
  • Bicycles and Pedestrian interfere with traffic on
    Main Street
  • There exists two trails separated by Brierly
    Brook

3
Objective
  • Provide an alternate route for walkers, cyclists
    and runners
  • Improve current trails and design a bridge to
    span Brierly Brook
  • Enhance accessibility to Columbus Field and Main
    Street from the Mall area

4
Trails and Antigonish
  • Relatively new to the town
  • - Walking Trails Proposal
  • (Darren G. Todd, 1999)
  • Developed Trails
  • - Hawthorne to Arbor Dr.
  • - The Landing
  • - Columbus Field

5

Hawthorne to Arbor Drive Bridge
6
Project Justification
  • Aid in trail development
  • - Antigonish to Pictou
  • - Pathways, Cape Breton
  • Economic/Town development
  • - Events (4 concerts Highland Games)
  • Promote Healthy Living
  • GO GREEN

7
Location
  • Brierly Brook Columbus Field towards Mall (Key
    Junction)

8
Types of Bridges
  • Truss

9
Types of Bridges
  • Suspension

10
Types of Bridges
  • Arched

11
Types of Bridges
  • Cable stayed

12
Materials
  • Aesthetics
  • It is important for the bridge to not look out of
    place
  • Some materials rust or corrode

13
Materials
  • Mechanics
  • The structure must be suitable for the desired
    conditions
  • Cost
  • People want the cheapest structure that wont fail

14
Materials
  • The most common types of pedestrian bridges are
  • Hewn timber beams
  • Glued and laminated wooden beams
  • Steel
  • Concrete
  • Each type has its pros and cons

15
Materials
  • Weathering and galvanized steel is more costly
than regular steel but doesnt need to be painted
  • Weathering and galvanized steel doesnt need the
    maintenance that regular steel does
  • Each type of steel has similar yield strengths

16

17
Materials
  • Concrete bridges cost more
  • High compressive strength, but low tensile
    strength
  • Not aesthetically pleasing

18
Materials
  • Glulam beams are pound for pound stronger than
    steel beams
  • Aesthetically pleasing

19
  • Regular timber beams can support large short term
    loads with minimal consequences
  • Price of wood is cheap but on the rise

20
Concerns/Problems
  • Political
  • Property Easements, Funding, Trails Act, Building
    Codes
  • Accommodating for multiple uses
  • Walking, running, wheelchair and stroller use,
    and cycling

21
Concerns/Problems
  • Flooding
  • Due to excess precipitation, surrounding areas
    become flooded
  • The riverbanks are often marshy, posing a problem
for the base of the bridge
