Is the Catholic Church the Universal church of
Christ ?
Catholicism
3
In the very beginning, let me stress that when
people leave error which has been imbued into
their consciousness so very keenly, it is not
altogether easy. Further, there was a time, as
you might well conclude, when I was adversely
sensitive to any attack upon Catholicism. Bearing
that in mind and realizing that there are
probably those in the audience who stand where I
stood, though I intend to speak plainly, I shall
strive to show my interest in you and
QUOTE

my consideration for you, whoever you might be,
by speech that is free from rancor and that which
is caustic. I trust that the spirit manifested
will not only be discernable but agreeable to
you, and that you will respond by lending an
attentive ear. --- Joseph C. Malone Why
I Left The Catholic Church

QUICK NOTES
  • -My Catholic Background
  • Raised in Catholicism from birth until middle
    school age
  • Baptized and confirmed, I received my first
communion and was made a part of St. Pauls
    Catholic Church in Norwalk, Ohio

6
QUICK NOTES
  • -My Catholic Background
  • I remember attending Mass on Sunday with my
grandpa who paid for my tuition to the Catholic
school and my classes for the Catechism
  • I went to confession and learned how to follow
    the sacraments of Catholicism

7
QUICK NOTES
  • -My Catholic Background
  • After grade school I moved away from my grandpa
and found myself in the public school system
  • This also led to my departure from attending the
Catholic Church and placed me in search of
    meaning in my life

8
QUICK NOTES
  • -My Catholic Background
  • Today I stand before you humbly, recognizing that
I was once a part of the very organization that
    we will be addressing today
  • With open hearts and open Bibles we should be
    able to discuss Catholicism freely

9
QUICK NOTES
  • -What does Catholicism mean
  • Catholic Universal
  • The faith, doctrine and system of the Roman
    Catholic Church
  • Catholic is also a name given to a member of the
    Catholic Church

10
QUICK NOTES
  • -Catholic Church Beginnings
  • Early church had elders in autonomous
    congregations
  • A decision was made to have a presiding elder in
    each church, called the bishop
  • The presiding elder became an overseer for not
only one local church but many others

11
QUICK NOTES
  • -Catholic Church Beginnings
  • Eventually there were 5 bishops that led the
    church
  • When conflict started between leaders, a split
resulted in only having one bishop over all
    churches
  • This bishop was eventually called the Pope of the
    church

12
QUICK NOTES
  • -Catholic Church Beginnings
  • Once these obvious errors in leadership were in
    place, others were introduced
  • Either you follow the leaders of the Catholic
Church or you adhere to the Bible and find that
each church must be led by local elders from the
    Bible

13
QUICK NOTES
  • -The Roman Catholic Church is one of the most
    influential religions on earth today.
  • Brazil - 90 - 135 million
  • Mexico - 95 - 90 million
  • USA - 30 - 60 million
  • Philippines - 85 - 60 million
  • Italy - 98 - 56 million

14
QUICK NOTES
  • -Those last 5 countries alone have over 400
million adherents to the Catholic faith.
  • France, Poland, Columbia, and Argentina - 90 -
    95 -200 million people.
  • From 1978 - 2000 40 increase over 1 billion

15
QUICK NOTES
  • -While there are many variations of the Catholic
faith, the traditional Catholics are the most
    influential.
  • Believe obedience to the Church is obedience to
    God.
  • Whatever the Church decrees is considered the
    will of God.

16
QUICK NOTES
  • -Traditional Roman Catholics are not challenged
to examine the Bible for themselves.
  • Believe that the Church has been given Divine
    authority
  • Trust that the Church (leaders) can interpret the
    Bible infallibly.

17
QUICK NOTES
-Because we all realize that our souls
salvation is at stake, we must be certain that
what we believe is absolute truth from
God. -While we will address some of the
contrasts in Catholicism with the Bible, we
want to mainly address the core issue of
authority
18
QUESTION
Who has the authority to tell us what we need to
do to please the Lord ? Is final authority found
in the Bible or is it found in the Church ?
19
QUICK NOTES
  • -The question of Divine authority must be
considered with the subject of Divine
    revelation
  • Has God spoken ? If so, where has He spoken ?
  • For Catholics, the Church is the final authority,
    not the Bible.

20
QUICK NOTES
  • -The Catholic Church believes in 5 sources of
    authority outside of the Bible
  • Additional Books
  • Tradition ( T t )
  • Papal Office
  • Bishops (with Pope)
  • Official Interpretation

21
QUICK NOTES
  • -These sources are permitted to exercise
    authority over Scripture
  • It is interesting how many Catholic teachings are
called authoritative that cannot be found in the
    Bible
  • The Bible warns of upholding tradition over Gods
    truth

22
Mark 76-8,13-14
But he answering, said to them Well did Isaias
prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written
This people honoureth me with their lips, but
their heart is far from me. And in vain do they
worship me, teaching doctrines and precepts of
men. For leaving the commandment of God, you hold
the tradition of men, the washing of pots and of
cups and many other things you do like to
theseMaking void the word of God by your own
tradition, which you have given forth. And many
other such like things you do. And calling again
the multitude unto him, he said to them Hear ye
me all and understand.
23
all those things are to be believed with divine
and Catholic faith which are contained in the
word of God, written or handed down , and which
the church, either by solemn judgment or by her
ordinary and universal magisterium, proposes for
belief as having been divinely revealed
--- Vatican I
QUOTE
24
QUESTION
What went wrong with the Catholic Church and what
will it take to unify the church into one
universal body of the saved in the 21st century?
25
QUICK NOTES
  • -As long as the Bible is not the standard of
faith, morals and practice for the church,
    division will exist.
  • Jesus prayed for unity among believers in the
    church
  • That unity only comes from being dedicated
followers of the word of the Lord.

26
There was a far more extensive use and
continuous use of Scriptures in the public
service of the early Church than there is among
us --- Cath. Dict.,509
QUOTE
27
In the first period (lasting perhaps till about
the fourth century) there were no books except
the Bible, from which lessons were read and
Psalms were sung. --- Cath. Ency., IX 296
QUOTE
28
The very nature of the Bible ought to prove to
any thinking man the impossibility of its being
the one safe method to find out what the Savior
taught. --- Question Box, 1913
QUOTE
29
There is nowhere in the New Testament a clear,
methodical statement of the teachings of Christ.
--- Question Box, 66
QUOTE
30
Again it has ever been practically impossible
for men, generally, to find out Christ from the
Bible only. --- Question Box, 70
QUOTE
31
The Bible was not intended to be a textbook of
the Christian religion. --- Catholic Facts,
50
QUOTE
32
To enable her to carry out this divine plan she
makes laws, laws purely ecclesiastical, but laws
that have the same binding force as the divine
laws themselvesFor Catholics, therefore, as far
as obligations are concerned there is no
practical difference between Gods law and the
law of the Church. --- Explanation of
Catholic Morals, 26
QUOTE
33
When asked, By what right do you teach doctrines
not found in the Bible? the answer was Because
the origin of our faith is not in the Bible
alone, but the Church which gives us both the
written and the unwritten word. ---
Question Box, 75
QUOTE
34
The Scripture indeed is a divine book but it is
a dead letter, which has to be explained.
--- Our Priesthood, 155
QUOTE
35
QUESTION
Is the Bible a dead letter? When we read the
writings of the inspired writers, can we
understand the truths that they are revealing?
36
Hebrews 412
For the word of God is living and effectual and
more piercing than any two edged sword and
reaching unto the division of the soul and the
spirit, of the joints also and the marrow and is
a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the
heart
37
Ephesians 33-4
As you reading, may understand my knowledge in
the mystery of Christ, which in other generations
was not known to the sons of men, as it is now
revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the
Spirit That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs
and of the same body and copartners of his
promise in Christ Jesus, by the gospel
38
Acts 2020
How I have kept back nothing that was profitable
to you, but have preached it to you, and taught
you publicly, and from house to house
39
Revelation 2218-19
For I testify to every one that heareth the
words of the prophecy of this book If any man
shall add to these things, God shall add unto him
the plagues written in this book. And if any man
shall take away from the words of the book of
this prophecy, God shall take away his part out
of the book of life, and out of the holy city,
and from these things that are written in this
book
40
QUESTION
Did God fail to communicate with mankind? Do we
need an official interpreter? Why does the
Catholic Church believe that they have authority?
41
QUICK NOTES
  • -I cant understand why anybody would say that
God cannot communicate clearly with us.
  • Can the Catholic church do a better job than God
in revealing His will to man?
  • When God speaks, He can and must be understood!

42
I left the Catholic Church because of its
disregard for the Word of God Further the
Catholic Church asserts, We do not in any wise
presuppose that the books of the New Testament
are inspired, but rather, they are only genuine,
authentic documents written by honest men.
--- Joseph C. Malone Why I Left
The Catholic Church
QUOTE
43
Revelation 1413
And I heard a voice from heaven, saying to me
Write Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.
From henceforth now, saith the Spirit, that they
may rest from their labours. For their works
follow them.
44
I Corinthians 1437
If any seem to be a prophet or spiritual, let
him know the things that I write to you, that
they are the commandments of the Lord.
45
The Popes letter is the most weighty authority
in the church. --- Cardinal Gibbons
Faith of our Fathers, 93
QUOTE
46
Private reading of the Scriptures, has led
millions to the utter denial of Christ. ---
Question Box, 131
QUOTE
47
Since it is clear from experience that if the
Sacred Books are permitted everywhere and without
discrimination in the vernacular, there will by
reason of the boldness of men arise therefrom
more harm than good . --- Council of
Trent Approved by Pius IV
1563 A.D.
QUOTE
48
QUICK NOTES
  • -We should now see what was meant when saying
the Scriptures lead to the denial of Christ.
  • Catholics see leaving their Church as denying
    Christ
  • When man reads the Bible he leaves the Catholic
Church because of the error found.

49
Men see that Catholicism is not in the Bible,
and that what is taught in the Bible has been
discarded. There is no institution on earth that
has as much to fear from reading the Bible as the
Catholic Church! A church that believes that the
Bible is a dangerous book would not make it her
textbook --- O.C. Lambert
Catholicism Against Itself
QUOTE
50
If occasionally she has seemed to restrict its
use or its diffusion this too was through an
easily comprehensible love and a particular
esteem for the Bible, that the sacred book might
not like a profane book be made a ground for
curiosity, endless discussions, and abuses of
every kind --- Cath. Ency. XV, 9
QUOTE
51
It is not necessary for all Christians to read
the Bible --- 1937 Franciscan
Almanac, 114
QUOTE
52
Speaking of the Church authorities, it is
said If, then, you receive a command of one who
holds the place of God, you should observe it
with the same diligence as if it came from God
himself --- Ligurois Bride of
Christ, 161
QUOTE
53
Speaking of one who enters Catholicism Once he
does so, he has no further use for his reason. He
enters the Church, an edifice illumined by the
superior light of revelation and faith. He can
leave reason, like a lantern, at the the door
--- Explanation of Catholic
Morals, 76
QUOTE
54
To understand the Bible properly, it must be
read through the eyeglasses of the Church, since
it is the Church whose mission it is to guard,
guarantee, and interpret the Sacred
pages --- Former Catholic Priest
James G. McCarthy
QUOTE
55
Hence this very vital conclusion is sustained
the Word has been spoken and confirmed it is
fixed, complete and final and there is,
therefore, absolutely no place or purpose in
Gods design for a so-called divine, infallible
apostolate. --- Jospeh C. Malone
Why I Left The Catholic Church
QUOTE
56
II Timothy 215
Carefully study to present thyself approved unto
God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly handling the word of truth.
57
Acts 1711
Now these were more noble than those in
Thessalonica, who received the word with all
eagerness, daily searching the scriptures,
whether these things were so.
58
QUICK NOTES
  • -While Catholics maintain that mistakes have
never been made in the papal office, this is
    just not true
  • Beliefs have changed
  • Some errors corrected
  • Obvious leader flaws
  • Clear fallibility exists

59
QUICK NOTES
  • -The problem is that the Catholic Church claims
the authority to rewrite doctrines and laws.
  • Accepting Apocrypha
  • Writing New Edicts
  • Honor Popes Decisions
  • Uphold New and Old Tradition

60
2 Timothy 313-44
But evil men and seducers shall grow worse and
worse erring, and driving into error, But
continue thou in those things which thou hast
learned and which have been committed to thee.
Knowing of whom thou hast learned them And
because from thy infancy thou hast known the holy
scriptures which can instruct thee to salvation
by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. All
scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to
teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in
justice That the man of God may be perfect,
furnished to every good work...
61
2 Timothy 313-44
I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who
shall judge the living and the dead, by his
coming and his kingdom Preach the word be
instant in season, out of season reprove,
entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. For
there shall be a time when they will not endure
sound doctrine but, according to their own
desires, they will heap to themselves teachers
having itching ears And will indeed turn away
their hearing from the truth, but will be turned
unto fables.
62
Galatians 16-9
I wonder that you are so soon removed from him
that called you into the grace of Christ, unto
another gospel. Which is not another only there
are some that trouble you and would pervert the
gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from
heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which
we have preached to you, let him be anathema. As
we said before, so now I say again If any one
preach to you a gospel, besides that which you
have received, let him be anathema
63
II Peter 21-3
But there were also false prophets among the
people, even as there shall be among you lying
teachers who shall bring in sects of perdition
and deny the Lord who bought them bringing upon
themselves swift destruction. And many shall
follow their riotousness, through whom the way of
truth shall be evil spoken of. And through
covetousness shall they with feigned words make
merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long
time lingereth not and their perdition
slumbereth not.
64
II John 9-11
Whosoever revolteth and continueth not in the
doctrine of Christ hath not God. He that
continueth in the doctrine, the same hath both
the Father and the Son. If any man come to you
and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into
the house nor say to him God speed you. For he
that saith unto him God speed you, communicateth
with his wicked works.
65
QUESTION
What led to the departure from the faith of the
early church of Christ to the position that the
Roman Catholic church is in today?
66
One is forced to admit that the gradual
corruption of Christianity began very
early --- Cath. Ency., XII, 414
QUOTE
67
Writers of the fourth century were prone to
describe many practices as Apostolic institutions
which certainly had no claim to be so regarded.
--- Cath. Ency., III, 484
QUOTE
68
At the end of the fifth century the Roman Church
was completely organized. --- Cath. Ency.,
IX, 61
QUOTE
69
Some parts of the governmental system of the
Catholic Church are of Divine origin, and many of
them are human institutions. --- Externals
of the Catholic Church, 19
QUOTE
70
If it is not identical in belief, government
etc. with the primitive church, then it is not
the Church of Christ --- Catholic Facts, 27
QUOTE
71
Many changes from the primitive church are
obvious in the Catholic Church in (1)
organization (2) doctrine (3) worship (4)
practice. --- Reg Ginn

QUESTION
When you look at the church belonging to Jesus
and compare it to the Catholic Church, are we
looking at the same church ?
73
QUICK NOTES
  • While the Catholic church follows Jesus in some
respects, it falls short in those most crucial
    areas.
  • Different Government
  • Different Belief System
  • Different Bible
  • Different Plan of Salvation

they went on their way, they came to a certain

What doth hinder me from being baptized? And
Philip said If thou believest with all thy
heart, thou mayest. And he answering, said I
believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And
he commanded the chariot to stand still. And they
went down into the water, both Philip and the
eunuch. And he baptized him.

Col. 118-19 Eph. 122-23
And he is the head of the body, the church who
is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,
that in all things he may hold the primacy
Because in him, it hath well pleased the Father
that all fulness should dwell And he hath
subjected all things under his feet and hath made
him head over all the church, Which is his body
and the fulness of him who is filled all in all.
86
QUICK NOTES
  • Those doctrines are either foreign to the Bible
or are errors in conflict with the Bible.
  • We could spend a great deal of time refuting
error in the Catholic faith, but one fact
remains, where there is no respect for the
Bible as Gods word, error prevails.
