COLLEGE
GOAL To develop a cultural-tourism community
development project around Harriette Simpson
Arnow, a nationally recognized novelist.
OBJECTIVES The Somerset Community College
District will create a historical character
presentation of Harriette Simpson Arnow. The
district will contract with a local writer to
create a three-act play based upon The
Dollmaker, Arnows most famous work. The
district will seek additional grant funding to
expand the Arnow project. The district will
present at least six local artistic performances
related to creating new cultural-tourism
opportunities with our service area.

THE PROBLEM
Tourism in the Somerset Community College
District depends solely upon summer boating on
Lake Cumberland.

• Born in Wayne County, Kentucky

• Attended School in Pulaski County, Kentucky

• Was Teacher and Principal at a small school in
  Pulaski County, Kentucky

• Wrote Novels About the Heritage and
  Culture of the Appalachian Area

Baritone, Todd Duncan, a native of Somerset,
Kentucky, was the first actor to portray Porgy
in George Gershwins classic, Porgy and Bess
Although not yet confirmed, we are in the initial
planning stages for a 100th Birthday Celebration
of Todd Duncan and his works for February 2003.

Kentucky Art Teachers Scholarship Project

• Statewide Art Scholarship Website
• Art Teachers will have the ability to download
  their student art pieces to the site directly
  from their classrooms
• Teachers can place student art under their
  schools search name

• Statewide Art Scholarship Competition
• Judges will select the top 1000 students using
  the website. These students will be invited to
  enter the competition
• 12 - 1,000 Art Scholarships are to be awarded
  annually
