Note Cleanliness is an important factor. Before
assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned
in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry.
Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry
parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which
may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If
any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for
replacement.

Illustration 1 g00869899 1. Install lip type
seals (32) and O-ring seal (33) in bearing cage
(29).
Illustration 2 g00870134 Note Lubricate the
seals and the seal surface of the shaft before
you install the cage assembly. 2. Carefully
install cage (29) on shaft (31).
  • Illustration 3 g00870142
  • Raise the temperature of bearing (36) to 135 C
(275 F) and use two people to install the
bearing on shaft (31). The weight of bearing (36)
is approximately 35 kg (77 lb).
  • Install spacer (35) on shaft assembly (31).
Install the spacer with relief against bearing
    (36).

4
Illustration 4 g00870160 5. Raise the
temperature of bearing (34) to 135 C (275 F).
Install the bearing on shaft (31) and against
spacer (35).
Illustration 5 g00870169 6. Use Tooling (A ) to
install retaining ring (28) on shaft (31) and
against bearing (34).
Illustration 6 g01040433 7. Install shaft
assembly (31) in swing drive housing (16).

  1. Apply 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the inside
diameter of swing drive housing (16).
  2. Lower the temperature of shaft assembly (31).
  3. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device
    to shaft assembly (31).
  4. Install the shaft assembly into swing drive
housing (16). Bearing (34) must be within the
bore of the swing drive housing.
  5. Remove Tooling (C) and the lifting device from
shaft assembly (31). Attach the tooling and the
lifting device to the swing drive housing.
  6. Lift the swing drive vertically. Use a hammer and
a drift to align bearing (34) in the lower bore
of the swing drive housing. When the bearing is
properly aligned in the bore, shaft assembly (31)
will drop into the proper position within the
    swing drive housing.

Start By a. Remove the fan pump. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Fan Pump -
Remove". NOTICE Care must be taken to ensure
that fluids are contained during performance of
inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and
repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the
fluid with suitable containers before opening any
compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication,
NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to
collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar
products. Dispose of all fluids according to
local regulations and mandates.
16
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is
hot and under pressure. Hot oils can cause
burns. To prevent possible personal injury,
release the pressure in the work tool hydraulic
circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel
circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the
filler cap before any hydraulic lines or
components are disconnected or removed. Remove
the filler cap only when the engine is stopped
and the filler cap is cool enough to touch.
1. Drain the hydraulic oil. The capacity of the
hydraulic system is 996 L (263 US gal).

Start By a. Remove the swing pump. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Swing Pump and Pump
Drive - Remove" in this manual. Note Regular
maintenance and frequent inspections are routine
precautions. Practice preventive maintenance
before damage occurs. Preventive maintenance can
help to avoid a failure. If a failure occurs, an
accurate diagnosis of the cause can prevent a
recurrence. Information is available to analyze
failures for piston pumps and motors. Refer to
Special Publication, SEBD0641, "Analyzing Axial
Piston Pump and Motor Failures". Note Many
times, the installation of new parts is not
necessary. The installation of used parts during
reconditioning is acceptable. Used parts can
result in a substantial cost reduction. Reusable
information is available on piston pumps and
motors. Refer to Special Publication, SEBF8032,
"Guideline For Reusable Parts - Piston Pumps and
Motors". During reconditioning, correct any
conditions that might have caused the original
failure.
21
Note Cleanliness is an important factor. Before
the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will
help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism. Dirt and contaminants can damage
precision components that are in pumps and
motors. All disassembly and assembly procedures
must be performed on a clean work surface. Clean
all the interior components in clean solvent. Dry
all the interior components with compressed air.
Plug ports and plug hoses on the machine during
repair. NOTICE Care must be taken to ensure
that fluids are contained during performance of
inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and
repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the
fluid with suitable containers before opening any
compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication,
NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to
collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar
products. Dispose of all fluids according to
local regulations and mandates.
Note The hydraulic oil must be contained in the
proper manner. Refer to Special Publication,
NENG7004, "Contamination Control Catalog". Note
The weight of the swing pump is approximately 152
kg (335 lb).
