Energy Consumption Because of the small volume
of the mote, energy management is a key factor to
consider in the design of smart dust
Technologies used
  • Batteries providing 1J/mm3
  • Solar cells storing energy on capacitor
  • Capacitors storing approximately 10mJ/mm3

Operation of the Mote
Because of the energy constraint, the part of the
dust must be powered on only when necessary.
Therefore the dust is controlled with a clock and
a few timers
Some timers control the sensors that measure
stimuli
Once a timer expires
  • Powers up the sensor
  • Sample is taken
  • Analysis of the data

Other timers are used to control the receiver
Once a timer expires
  • Powers up the receiver
  • Looks for an incoming packet
  • Analysis of the data
  • A message can be sent using a laser diode

Remote programming allows to send new
instructions to the individuals mote
