  • Objectives
  • To build skills for developing application
    specific algorithms protocols for sensor
networks using Tiny-OS and nesC under Berkeley
    mote platform.
  • To have hands-on experience on sensor data
    acquisition in real environment.
  • To validate developed analytical models for
    network performance measurement.
  • To enhance and optimize algorithms and
protocols developed based on the hands-on
    experience achieved.

4
  • System Capabilities
  • Heterogeneous sensing acoustic vibration.
  • Integrated RF ID readers with the system.
  • Can differentiate between multiple RF ID tags
    and identify the associated objects.
  • Performs multi-hop routing.
  • Performs data aggregation.
  • Energy aware efficient algorithms nodes are in
    sleep/idle mode when not activated.

  • Graphic Viewer Control UI Displays the
virtual network topology and signals detected by
    acoustic and motion sensors.
  • Serial Forwarder Monitors serial port of PC to
    collect incoming raw data.
  • Data Sink Destination of sensed data where
    aggregation takes place.
  • Sensor Node Senses acoustic, vibration (or
temperature/ seismic) signals and serve as a
router to forward incoming sensed data directed
    to the data sink.
  • RF ID Reader Reads RF ID tags and sends to the
    BS.

Methodology
  • Deployment
  • Acoustic sensors RF ID tag readers are
    deployed near the entrance.
  • Motion/Acoustic sensors are deployed inside the
    surveillance area.
  • Acoustic Sensors
  • Detect sound intensity, activate the motion
    sensors routes data.
  • Motion Sensors
  • Detect vibration intensity forward their own
data and acoustic sensors data to the aggregator.
  • Aggregator
  • Aggregates received acoustic motion signal
    intensities passes to the BS.
  • BS checks RF ID tag aggregated value against
user specified conditions and take appropriate
    actions.

8
A Simple Scenario
  • Objects carrying RF ID tags enter the room and
    possibly make some sound.
  • Certain RF ID tags are marked as black-listed.
  • Sensors measure acoustic vibration signals.
  • RF ID readers read the tags (can differentiate
    among multiple tags).
  • System raises alarm when
  • RF ID tag is black-listed
  • Measured signal is more than a threshold and RF
    ID tag is absent
