1
ICT HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA NASENI
EXPERIENCE
  • BY
  • FRANK C. OBI, Ph.D
  • CENTRE FOR ADAPTATION OF TECHNOLOGY (CAT)
  • NATIONAL AGENCY FOR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
    INFRASTRUCTURE (NASENI)
  • FEDERAL MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
  • NIGERIA

2
INTRODUCTION
  • NEED FOR ICT HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT
  • Hardware development should go hand in hand with
    software development
  • The software is the soul and should be housed in
a body which is the hardware
  • National Agency for Science and Engineering
Infrastructure (NASENI) is to develop appropriate
technologies and their manufacturing systems and
    cede to private sector industries.

3
NASENI MANDATE
  • NASENI operates through Development Centres
  • Scientific Equipment Development Centres (SEDI)
in Enugu and Minna develop and produce
    scientific equipment, then transfer these
    technologies to private sector satellite
    industries.
  • Centre for Adaptation of Technology (CAT), Awka
develop and produce electronic devices and
    assemblies, computer technologies and their
    production systems, then transfer these
    technologies to private sector satellite
    industries.
  • Hydraulic Equipment Development Centre (HEDI),
Kano - develop and produce hydraulic and
    pneumatic machinery, fittings and their
    production systems, then transfer these
    technologies to private sector satellite
    industries.
  • Engineering Materials Development Centre (EMDI),
Akure - develop and produce engineering materials
and their production systems, then transfer these
    technologies to private sector satellite
    industries.
  • National Engineering Design Development Centre
    (NEDDEC), Nnewi develop engineering design
capacity and transfer to SMEs with a view to
    ensuring that made-in-Nigeria products attain
    standard specifications, global competitiveness
    and acceptability.

4
ICT HARDWARE DEVELOMENT
  • ICT hardware development goes beyond computer
    assembly.
  • Some indigenous private computer companies have
been licensed to manufacture computers. E.g
    Zinox, Omatek, Unitech, etc.
  • ICT equipment include GSM handsets, telephones,
    VSAT, Broadcast equipment, etc.
  • Embedded systems and embedded programming/firmware

5
NASENI EXPERIENCE
  • In the process of developing ICT hardware, there
is an interplay of many engineering processes.
  • an example of ICT hardware is the printed circuit
    board (PCB)
  • PCB consists of electronic components copper
    clad boards, resistors, capacitors,
    semi-conductor devices including microprocessors
    and memory chips.
  • these components are made of engineering
    materials.
  • to add value, the entire system should be
designed and produced putting into consideration
    standardization, aesthetics, ergonomics, etc.
  • technological empowerment of SMEs for quality
    engineering practices
  • provide manpower development.

8
NASENI EXPERIENCE (contd)
  • CAT, AWKA
  • Electronic Design Automation(EDA) of PCB
    production
  • use of Virtual Electronic Laboratory for design
    simulation
  • development of Artificial Intelligence Systems
  • photovoltaic applications
  • EMDI, AKURE
  • synthesis of amorphous and nano-crystalline
    semiconductor materials.
  • NEDDEC, NNEWI
  • developing engineering designs for ICT equipment
  • design of moulds, punches and dies
  • use of Virtual Manufacturing (design, modeling
    and simulation)
  • NASENI HQ
  • production of Solar panels.

CONCLUSION/RECOMENDATIONS
  • The software is not useful outside the hardware
  • ICT is generally addressing technologies that
    enable acquisition, storage, retrieval,
    processing, distribution and utilization of
information, as well as transmission and
    reception of the processed information
  • Africa cannot be competitive in the global
information economy without a developed ICT
    industry
  • CODI should encourage and promote ICT hardware
    development.
  • CODI and indeed Africa should equally consider
and apply embedded programming, embedded systems
and firmware development as a vital tool for
    economic development
  • Africa should leverage on its abundance of solar
energy to develop photovoltaic applications for
advancement of ICT capabilities in the rural
    communities.
  • NASENI has the capacity to develop ICT hardware
and welcome collaboration from any other
    stakeholders.
