FLATWEAVE CARPET
What are Flat weave Carpet/Rug? A flatweave
Carpet/Rug is created without knots. These rugs
are made from verticle and horizontal fibers that
are woven together to create a single piece.
While flatweave rugs are incredibly popular
today, they are still rooted in the historical
tradition of rug making. Different Styles The
older styles of flatweave rugs include Chainstich
rugs, Needlepoint rugs, Aubusson Weaves, and
Hooked Rugs. Todays most popu- lar flatweave
styles include Dhurries, Soumaks, and Kilims like
Scandinavian Kilims. Why choose flatweave
Carpet/Rug? Flatweave rugs are thin rugs that
have a no-pile construction. They are lightweight
rugs that are easy to pick up and move around.
They look great on hardwood floors, and they
look especially fitting layered on top of natural
fiber rugs. Many flatweave rugs have tassels on
the ends that look great if you are going for a
more boho style. Materials used Wool and
cotton are two of the more popular materials used
in flatweave rugs, but you will find that
flatweave rugs come in many differ- ent
materials. Others include jute, polyester,
viscose, polypropylene, acrylic, and even
seagrass.

consider its actual texture before purchasing.
So, what does a jute rug feel like? A jute rug

handwoven and spun into coarse strands. The jute
rugs are a resurrected trend from the markets.
There are vast quantities of jute rugs in the
western world where they have become high
fashion Three shades of jute come together in a
flatweave jute rug that offers unexpected depth.

darker, the rug showcases the natural fiber in a

Kilims are widely loved for their eye catching
designs which enhance the look of spaces. Even
the drabbest looking room can instantly turn
into a lively haven when it meets the striking
pat- terns and vivid color palettes of an
exquisite Kilim Kilims are flat woven
tapestry-like rugs, which have been hand- made
by groups of tribal and nomadic people of the
Rug Belt for thousands of years. Unlike most
rugs, kilims dont have plush piles - this means
that they are light and not as soft to touch,
but highly durable.

Punja durries are familiar objects in almost
every household in the villages of Haryana
(India) and is mainly practiced as a leisure
time activity by women. The craft gets its name
from a metallic claw-like tool called punja in
the local dialect, used to beat and set the
filling threads. The punja durries are mostly
woven in bright colours using myriad motifs. The
designs are varied and are skillfully made to
enhance the aesthetic appeal of these durries.
These are woven into stripes, check boards,
squares, and pictures of birds, animals, human
figures and plants etc.

HAND KNOTTED
What Is a Hand-Knotted Rug? Hand-knotting is an
ancient art used to make rugs that are
masterpieces of intricate designs. A hand-knotted
rug is a one-of-a-kind rug that is woven
completely by hand on a special loom. Popular
types of hand-knotted rugs include Oriental and
Persian rugs. Material Used These rugs are made
from natural materials, such as wool, silk, and
cotton. They have a flatter pile with less
texture. Weaving a hand-knotted rug requires a
great deal of skill and often a lot of time to
produce. The quality and very often the cost of
a hand-knotted rug is determined by the number of
knots per square inch. In this case, a higher
density means better quality. A complex pattern
can require very dense knotting, and thus it can
take a long time to produce. It can often take
months to complete a hand-knotted rug. An average
weaver can tie about 10,000 knots per day. So you
can imagine how long it can take to complete one
rug, especially if it happens to be a large one.
The time involved in making it also accounts for
hand-knotted rugs costing more on average than
hand-tufted rugs.

Gabbeh carpets are probably the best-known
hand-knot- ted oriental carpets. Made by
Ghashghai nomads of Iran and manufacturers in
India, these carpets are mostly very simple in
their patterns and contain only a few decorative
elements. They are rough cut and long piled rugs
of rich color and best quality wool dyed
naturally, finished with a thick pile. These
rugs are made from natural materials, such as
wool, silk, and cotton.

Moroccan carpet (also known a berber rugs) is one
of the premium class of hand knotted carpets.
These are made using innumerous knots made is a
sequential manner by some highly skilled
craftmans. Because each rug is handcrafted, no
two are alike. Moroccan rugs were originally
made of natural wool fibers. Moroccan rugs come
in a variety of pile heights. These rugs are
much softer than the usual rug and exude an air
of exclusivity.

Ziegler Carpets are known . These are
distinguished by their sparsely drawn, large
scale, over-sized designs and use of soft
colors. They are lovely rugs that are enormously
popular with decorators. Ziegler rugs are based
on the classical Persian rugs. To give them an
antique look, the carpets are bleached in the sun
and rubbed with stones to slightly wipe the
pile. The rugs are knotted by hand in an old
tradition.

The hand-knotted oriental rugs are most of the
time made in exclusive wool and silk materials.
They are considered the most unique, durable,
and expensive rugs types. The primary and most
authentic type of material used in rug making is

HAND TUFTED
What Is a Hand-Tufted Rug? A hand-tufted rug is
made partially by hand and partially by a
mechanized tool. This type of rug is made of
wool. The process for creating a hand-tufted rug
differs greatly from a hand-knotted rug. A
hand-tufted rug is made by punching strands of
wool into a canvas that is stretched on a frame
with the help of a hand-operated tool. This
process is not very time-intensive and does not
require the same level of skill that
hand-knotting does. Materials used Most
commonly used material for hand tufted rugs
giving best results is wool. Polyester,
poly-propylene, silk, etc could also be
used. How to Identify Hand-Tufted Rugs? After
piling with wool, the rug is removed from the
frame. A hand-tufted rug will have some sort of a
backing to hold the tufts in place. Often a
scrim fabric is glued to the back. To complete
the rug, a fringe is added by either sewing or
gluing it on. Durability Upto 20 years based
upon the usage and if taken proper care of.

All loop carpets offer a very smooth surface to
the carpet. Like the other carpet, All loop
carpets doesnt have any trimmed surfaces.
Instead it have yarn loops on the surface. All
loop carpets are the perfect blend of durability
and performance. The tightly woven, densely
packed fibres mean an all loop carpet is more
hard-wearing than a cut pile carpet and requires
less maintenance.

The Laurie Baft carpets were initially
hand-knotted by the nomads from the Qashqai and
Luri tribes of south west Iran. The wool is
hand-spun, naturally dyed, and of high quality,
resulting in long-lasting carpets. Loribaft is
always a sound investment because of the
longevity of the rugs themselves.

loop Cut is a style of carpet that is made by
combining looped fibers with cut (straight)
ones. This allows the manufacturer to create a
design in the carpet, which can be geometric or
abstract.

23
Probably the oldest style of carpet, loop pile
carpet is made from uncut loops of yarn. They
are hard wearing and practical as the
colourations help hide soiling and dont show
tracking as much as most other styles. Generally
these loops have a more rugged appearance and
are often favoured for use on the stairs, in
hallways or in other high traffic areas.
global_at_siarugs.com
24
Tip sheared is made when some loops are tufted
higher than others. The result is a textured,
patterned carpet which is forgiving for
footprints and dirt as they are hidden in the
pile. The shearing process partially cuts the
high loop tufts, leaving the lower ones uncut.
When the carpet is sheared, the higher loop
tufts are partly cut, but the lowers ones are
not, making a pattern where the cut tufts have a
darker appearance than the lower ones.

SUSTAINABLE - RECYCLED
By the principle of 3 R i.e. Reduce, Reuse and
Recycle. These rugs are well following the 3R
Principle. The carpets are here made using
leftover fabric scraps or tarnished clothes and
apparels. Overall these carpets are a best
example of converting waste to something that
enhance the appearance of the living space. A
few type of carpets lying in this category
majorly are braided carpets and cotton patchwork
carpets.
