What Is a Jib Crane and How Does It Work?
Cranes are an essential component of every civil
engineering project. Depending on the amount of
weight to be lifted and the amount of space
available for movement at the construction site,
different types of cranes are utilized. A jib
crane is one example of this. It is made up of a
pillar that is either fastened to the wall or
mounted on the floor. A horizontal jib or boom
with a moveable hoist is supported by the pillar.
With the use of a drum, or lift-wheel, that has a
chain or rope wrapped around it, the hoist is
used to lift or lower a cargo. The drum can be
operated manually and is powered by electricity
or pneumatics. The lifting medium is commonly a
chain, but fiber rope or wire cable can also be
used. A lifting hook attached to the lifting
medium is used to lift the load.
3All cranes with a rotating boom linked to a
vertical mast and supporting an electrically or
pneumatically operated hoist are referred to as
jib cranes. Jib cranes are used in the
construction industry as well as on commercial
and military ships. The self-supported,
floor-mounted jib crane is the most prevalent
form. Jib cranes are crucial in all types of
lifting processes since they relieve the overhead
crane of a lot of effort and reduce the time
spent waiting.
Jib cranes are divided into three categories
- Floor-mounted Type
- Wall mounted Type (fixed)
- Wall mounted Type (traveling)
Type that is mounted on the floor- The most
frequent Jib crane is this one. A self-supporting
jib crane with a vertical mast set on a concrete
foundation is known as a floor mounted jib crane.
These cranes are typically employed to distribute
the load of larger cranes. The crane is built in
the manner described above. All of these cranes
are manually controlled and can rotate 360
degrees.
Type that is installed to the wall (fixed)- This
crane is positioned horizontally on the wall and
features an RCC column bracket mounting instead
of a vertical shaft.
4The hoist mechanism is similar to that of a
floor-mounted hoist, except it does not have a
vertical boom. The RCC column bracket rotates up
to 200 degrees, but it covers the region
surrounding the bracket mounting without
obstructing the floor.
Type that is installed to the wall
(traveling)- This kinds structure is similar to
that of the fixed type, with the exception that
the crane can cover the lengthwise region near
the building columns without causing hindrance at
floor level. The cranes columns are custom-made,
and instead of spinning, the crane moves along a
runway track suspended between building columns.
