Introduction
- As I had hoped, I ended up having the time of my
life! I was able to see many different parts of
France during my stay and also got to travel to
Interlaken, Switzerland for a weekend. My program
was very interesting and allowed me to study
fashion from a perspective other then the United
States. - The housing was a simple dorm and everyone had
their own bathroom which was really nice. A food
plan was provided at various cafeterias around
town. The program was laid out so that there were
not necessarily different courses but instead
different guest speakers and lecture topics each
day. We were able to meet many different local
people and other students at the dorm and also
through going out to bars/restaurants at night.
In my spare time I went out a lot to dance clubs
and discos and we were also able to do a lot of
shopping and site-seeing.
I studied abroad in Lyon, France for a month
during the summer of 2006. I chose to participate
in this program because it was focused on
textiles which directly relates to my major,
Consumer and Textile Marketing.
Objectives
I chose this program because I had always wanted
to study abroad and with this I could experience
the textile industry in another country. France
is also as a leader in the textile business and a
firsthand look at this was enticing.
- What did you hope to learn and experience
- The cultural differences in countries other then
America - Experience the differences in the fashion
industry overseas - Encounter people with lifestyles different from
my own - The opportunity to visit historical places that
have influenced the world
Discussion / Conclusion
I strongly recommend studying abroad to any
student who is lucky enough to have the
opportunity. This is truly a life-changing trip
and I could not imagine regretting it. You meet
so many different people and experience so many
new and unique things that you never would have
had you stayed in the U.S. I learned a lot about
Frances fashion and textile industries and I was
also able to visit many museums and beautiful
historical sites. It may be hard stepping
outside of your usual boundaries but in the end,
it is completely worth it.
Materials and Methods
I first found out about this program first
through my major and then from a friend of mine
who participated in the program the year before I
did. In order to get accepted into the
program, you really just had to apply and fill
out different forms. The preparation you go
through to study abroad can be overwhelming, but
the details are part of the fun! It takes time to
book your trip, plan weekend trips to other
countries and cities, and to figure out
everything you want to see and do while abroad. I
booked my own air travel but the lodging was done
through the university.
