The Journey
  • Original definition came from the United Kingdom
    following the establishment of the Creative
    Industries Task Force (C.I.T.F.) in 1998
  • They the creative industries are part of
    the fullest expression of human intellect. At
    the same time, however we needed to understand
    how the arts and cultural and creative activity
    more generally had a major impact on the national
    economy as well.

Current Situation
  • The creative industries have been identified by
    the current government as one of the key areas
    for innovative economic growth, along with bio
    technology and communications technology
  • Creativity is at the heart of innovation and it
    satisfies all three of the targeting principles.

  • The creative industries contribute more than
    NZ3.5 billion to New Zealands GDP every year
  • Creative Industries contribute around 3.1 of
    total NZ GDP
  • This is comparable with communication services,
    finance and education sectors
  • Creative industries is growing at a faster rate
    than the economy as a whole
  • 4-5 of all jobs are in the creative industries
    (51,000)
  • If grow continues, by 2010 there will be 68,000
    people employed full time in this sector
  • NZ earns between 340-500million per annum
  • in export earnings from the C.I.

    those industries traditionally associated with
    creativity and therefore the arts have a huge
    role to play in the future economic well being of
    the country. The arts are also the means to
    spiritually heal the nation.
