Should You Choose Single Sided Or Double Sided
PCBs? - Miracle Electronics
PCB assembly from Germany is the most important
component of an electronic component, which
serves as a medium for electrical connections
between various pieces that make up the
equipment. There are two main types of PCBs that
you can choose from single sided and double
sided. While both these types serve the same
purpose of building electrical connections, there
are certain things that make them different.
Both single and double sided PCBs are made of the
same material FR-4, which comprises of
fiberglass mixed with epoxy. This is usually
layered with copper for conductivity, which is
then coated in solder mask for the perfect
finish. PCBs were first introduced as single
sided simple circuit boards, wherein large
rectangular chips
2
with wide pins lined the edges that allowed
traces to be routed between the pins, and
components like resistors and capacitors were
placed near one another with short traces being
made easy to accomplish. Later, in the 1980s,
there were fundamental changes made to the PCB
constructions. Things shifted from through hole
to surface mount. The boards started becoming
smaller. Working within the confines of a single
piece of copper to carry current to components
wasnt required as it became easier to switch
sides of the board. This made engineers shift
towards the double-sided boards, which helped to
create large ground and power planes. Circuit
boards slowly started converting into pieces
that had no individual traces, but instead had
cut-outs of a larger piece of copper. This helped
a lot with electromagnetic interference, heat
dissipation, and manufacturing processes as it
resulted in fewer traces. However, this never
meant that single sided PCBs were completely
eliminated. Even today, single sided PCBs still
appear in several commercially available
products. The main reason behind this is that
single sided PCBs are comparatively cheaper and
come with a shorter lead time. Furthermore,
single sided PCBs can serve better safety and
ampacity. Single sided PCBs are seen to be used
in simple electronics like radio equipment,
calculators, camera systems, and printers. On the
other

hand, double sided PCBs are used in much complex
systems like car dashboards, amplifiers,
lighting systems, and vending machines. Why
single sided PCBs? Single sided PCBs are
cost-effective and affordable due to the simple
basic design. The simplicity of the design means
fewer problems during the manufacturing stage,
meaning easier processes, faster speeds, and
higher volume productions. Thus, these PCBs are
the best choice for circuit designs that are
simple and have a low density. Why double
sided PCBs? Double sided PCBs enable more
flexibility in the design and are more apt for
complex circuits. They have an extra layer to add
more components, which means more space where
you can place additional components and have
room for extra connections, if required. Being
able to be used on both sides, double sided PCBs
reduce the size of the board needed, which can be
a great cost- saving factor with advanced
features. No matter what you choose, you can
always get in touch with Miracle Electronics to
