6Preparation for the majorImpaction Criteria
- Complete the following lower division courses
- Business courses (C or better)
- Acct 201/202, Econ 101/102, Fin 240, IDS 180, and
Stat 119 or Econ 201 - Regional/Cultural courses (C or better)
- Language courses
- Refer to your advising guide for specific
courses for your language and regional emphasis - Minimum 2.90 cumulative GPA No exceptions
- 60 transferable units
7Declaring Upper Division and changing your Major
- You must apply for upper division status
- Complete forms for Business, Language, and
Regional/Cultural courses (forms on our website) - Submit forms with a current Degree Evaluation
- Mid-semester declaration allowed for students
with a 3.30 cumulative GPA or higher - Conditional declarations are given on a
case-by-case basis (if you think you qualify,
please see IB advisor)

9IB Semester Abroad Requirement
- Can be fulfilled in 3 ways
- International Internship (250 hours) must be
located in region and language of emphasis - Multiple Degree Program
- Study Abroad (on approved IB exchange)
- Note Doing an International Internship will
complete the Study Abroad requirement and the IB
495 requirement.
10IB 495 - Internship
- Required course in upper division
Regional/Cultural section - Internship coordinator is Dr. Renatte Adler
- Attend IB 495 Orientation to obtain add code to
enroll in IB 495 (only offered Fall/Spring) - 250 hours (150 if not used to replace Study
Abroad) - Can be paid or unpaid
- If you are doing an internship instead of Study
Abroad, the internship must be done
internationally in your language/region - Internship can be completed during summer

13Study Abroad
- IB Exchange
- IB-managed bilateral exchanges
- Same tuition and financial award
- 1 or 2 semesters (if space available) in
Region/Language of emphasis - Pass an equivalent of full-time (12 SDSU units)
- CR/NC for all courses taken abroad
- No GEs abroad
- Same policies (prerequisites course failures
apply) - No course forgiveness abroad
14Requirements to Study Abroad-Track I-
- Attend a Study Abroad Information Session one
year prior to intended study abroad term. - Achieve upper division status by the beginning of
the semester prior to intended study abroad term.
Exceptions made for Multiple-Degree students - Complete or be currently registered for two
approved 300/400-level language courses one
semester prior to departure. - Exceptions made for Multiple-Degree students.
- Three approved 300/400 level language courses
strongly recommended for French and Italian
emphasis. - Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 that will be
maintained up to the point of departure to the
abroad institution. - Have a minimum 2.0 semester GPA the semester
prior to departure. - Be in good academic standing (not on probation).
15Requirements to Study Abroad -Track II-
- Chinese - Attend a Study Abroad Information
Session one year prior to intended study abroad
term. - Arabic and Russian schedule an appointment with
Maribel Franco. - Japanese attend information session hosted by
ISC and Prof. Higurashi. - For MGU only (Russian Exchange) have completed
or be currently registered in at least 2,
preferably 3, approved 300/400 level language
courses one semester prior to departure. - Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 that will be
maintained up to the point of departure to the
abroad institution. - Have a minimum 2.0 semester GPA the semester
prior to departure. - Be in good academic standing (not on probation).
16IB Exchange Language -Track I-
- Equivalency of satisfactory completion of a full
SDSU academic load (12 transferable units) at
host institution - 4 SDSU courses
- 2 must be from Business area core or spec
- Recommended to take 2 SPEC, 1 REG/CULT 1 LANG
- All courses in target language of foreign
university - Only take pre-approved substitutions (emailed
with application) - LANG Business
Students with advanced Russian follow Language
Track I on MGU exchange only
17IB Exchange Language -Track II-
- Equivalency of satisfactory completion of a full
SDSU academic load (12 transferable units) at
host institution - Some in target language (REG/CULT LANG)
- Possible enrollment in Business courses

18Study Abroad Information Sessions
- Opportunity to learn general information about IB
Study Abroad - Attendance required one year in advance of
intended study abroad term - Required in order to meet with the Study Abroad
Advisor - Learn specific information about current study
abroad programs offered in region and language of
emphasis - Upcoming dates listed on IB website Plan ahead!
19IB Honors Program
- Overall GPA within the major must be 3.25 or
higher - Study Abroad for 1 year (Fall and Spring
Semesters) - International Internship (abroad)
- Minor in a 3rd language
- or test out at a minor equivalency level
talk to IB Academic Advisor - IB 490 Senior Honors Thesis will be arranged
with IB Program Director
20IB Advising Process
- Individual advising by appointment only
- Make appointments by phone or in person (not by
email) - Dont be late! if you are more than 5 minutes
late, you will need to reschedule - For general questions you can call or email
(include RED ID and be specific!) - General Education (GE) Advising is done at
Advising Evaluations Office (SSW 1551) - Must attend a Study Abroad Information Session to
make individual appointments with the Study
Abroad Advisors.
21IB Major Restrictions
- IB Majors cannot emphasize in the same language
of instruction of their high school (i.e. Spanish
speaking High School) - NOTE Students cannot choose Japanese language if
their Junior High school language of instruction
was also Japanese. - IB Majors cannot double major or minor in any
department in the College of Business (i.e.
Finance) - IB Majors cannot double major or minor in the
language or Regional/Cultural studies they are
emphasizing for IB (i.e. European Studies)
