  purest form of expressionist art wherein the
  artist does not have to adhere to the constraints
  of a real-life subject or object and can let his
  imagination run wild. They were first created at
  the start of the 20th century when many artists
  were trying to break free of traditional or
  formal schools of thought by not referencing
  reality in their paintings.
