Title: Biotechnology Day

1
Biotechnology Day!
  • By Maddy Holmes, Sarah Camlica and Emma Roney.

2
General Information
  • Biology the study of living things
  • Technology the tool for evolution
  • Biotechnology using living things (eg plants,
animals or bacteria) to create products or to do
tasks for humans (eg food, medicine or
    cosmetics).

3
Cells
  • All living things are made out of cells. There
are different types, but all living things have
    cells.
  • Inside the cell is a Nucleus. Inside the Nucleus
you can find DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid). DNA
makes up genes. Genes determinate your
    characteristics.

4
DNA Extraction
  • DNA is in all living things, in our case we were
looking at the DNA of fruit. To extract DNA we
had to squash strawberries and then make an
extraction buffer that was made of
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Detergent
  • Then we mixed the mashed strawberry and the
extraction buffer then we poured it into a test
tube and poured in a little bit of methylated
spirits. We then we got a sate stick and pulled
out the DNA from the middle of the tube.

5
DNA Models
  • DNA is a spiralling ladder, to make this ladder
    we used
  • Gummy Bears
  • Marshmallows
  • Toothpicks
  • Wire
  • We lined up pink and white marshmallows onto the
wire and lined gummy bears onto the toothpicks
and stuck it in the marshmallows. Then we had
something that was SUPPOSED to look like this.

6
Yeast
  • Yeast is a bacteria and can live in dry and wet
conditions, except in wet conditions, yeast is
activated to produce acid - just like vinegar and
    baking soda.
  • We actually experimented mixing yeast with water,
pouring it in a bottle and putting a balloon over
it. We also had to make dough with yeast, water
and flour and by the next morning we noticed that
the dough had expanded. This was because acid was
produced and bubbles were made, so along with
    bubbles the dough expanded.
