Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change
  • Signed in 1997 in force since 16 February 2005
  • Commits industrialised countries to reduce their
    greenhouse gas emissions by, on average of 5.2
    below 1990 levels in 2008-12
  • Individual, quantified emission targets for each
    industrialized country
  • Six greenhouse gases covered Carbon dioxide,
    Methane, Nitrous oxide, Sulfur hexafluoride,
    Hydro-fluoro carbon (HFCs), and Per-fluoro
    carbons (PFCs)
  • Flexibility mechanisms for financing emission
    reductions abroad
  • Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
  • Joint Implementation (JI)
  • International Emissions Trading
  • US have not ratified EU, China, India, Brazil

Indias Position in The Global Carbon Market
  • India has consolidated its leadership position in
    terms of Host Country Approved CDM projects.
  • As on date, a total 1,034 projects have got DNA
    approval.
  • The estimated CER volume reaches 508 million
    (till 2012) if they successfully registered by
    CDM-EB.
  • Total nos. of project registered by CDM-EB as on
    26 August 2008 1149
  • India is also the global leader in terms of
    registered projects with a total of 356 Indian
    projects (as of 10 August 2008).
  • Total CERs issued (Globally) 709 projects.
  • CERs issued for Indian Projects is 242.
  • Total CERs Issued from Indian Projects is
    46,754,993 .
  • Investment touches 118,079 Crore rupees ,all
    unilateral projects
  • The majority of registered project in India are
    energy efficiency, renewable energy project
    focusing on hydropower, and wind energy

National Action Plan on Climate Change
  • India is a Non Annex I country and has no
    specific and mandatory mitigation obligations.
    This is provided for under the UNFCCC and is
    enshrined in the principle of Common but
    Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective
    Capabilities (CBDR).
  • PMs council on Climate Change ,GOI issues
    National Action Plan on Climate Change emphasis's
    on
  • Indias development path is sustainable .The 
    vision of the document is based on of Father of
    Nation Mahatma Gandhis wise dictum The earth
    has enough resources to meet peoples needs, but
    will never have enough to satisfy peoples
    greed. Indias vision is to create a prosperous,
    but not wasteful, global society, an global
    economy that is self-sustaining in   terms of its
    ability to generate the creative and innovative
    energies of people and is mindful of
    responsibilities to both present and future
    generations. 
  • Way forward is Climate proofing eight National
    missions and promoting understanding of this new
    challenge to mankind.
  • Climate Change Division ,MoEF is given special
    mandate to regulate NAPCC
