UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) or drones, as theyre more commonly known as, were initially been best known for their military use and intelligence applications, such as for aerial surveillance and targeted assassinations. Cheaper than standard military aircraft and able to be piloted remotely, its easy to see why they were deployed for such purposes.
Now, however, drones are frequently being used for many more civilian purposes, such as hunting hurricanes, protecting wildlife and delivering parcels. One important new task that drones are currently being assigned to, is mapping

Mapping with drones
While looking every bit like a basic model airplane thats designed only for recreational purposes, small, lightweight drones are now capable of taking thousands of digital images when surveying a landscape. Each one of these images can then be compiled to make a complete and highly accurate, 3D map.

Government and military satellites are already producing similar maps, so while the premise may be nothing new, UAVs and their technological advances mean that smaller companies and even individuals, are now able to produce their own maps. The new technology is also allowing for customization and use of drones for a whole new series of applications.
Modern day drones are now able to fly guided completely by GPS, without the need for a remote control, and can be launched at the mere push of a button or by hand. Compact and robust, theyre designed to be able to cope well in rough weather conditions too. They are also considered to be virtually fool proof and safe, meaning that again, they can be confidently used by civilians.

Who are using drones for mapping purposes?
Many large technology companies, festival organisers, property owners, disaster relief teams (such as those involved in the hurricane relief efforts in Haiti), farmers who are trying to remotely manage crops and fields over a large area and even mining companies are using drone technology to monitor changes to open pit mines.

How do drones map areas?
Drones are deployed on a series of flights using automated software, where they proceed to take many thousands of highly accurate and precise photographs the company or individual then places these images together to form a complete map.
Since drone technology isnt yet as widely available as it may one day be, new applications are only just beginning to emerge, but in so far as mapping is concerned, drone have proved to be extremely useful and will certainly play an important role in this field, throughout the future.
