Innerspring Mattress
An innerspring mattress uses a steel coil support
system. Manufacturers offer several different
types of spring systems, including units with
springs connected into a single unit and
individually wrapped pocketed coils. Spring
shapes, designs, coil gauge, and number of coils
in a mattress can vary. The innerspring is
covered by padding or upholstery materials, which
can include various foams, fiber, and additional
layers of smaller steel springs. Coil count can
be more arbitrary, but the idea is that the
greater the number of coils, the more points of
support and greater distribution, thus the better
the bed can contour and support the
sleeper. Pros There are plenty of innerspring
mattresses on the market from which to choose.
They range in firmness, the fluffiness of the
pillow top, and in price to fit nearly every
preference and pocket book. Cons There's no
direct relationship in most cases between price
and comfort, but steering clear of the cheapest
innerspring mattress. If there aren't enough
springs and cushion to offer you proper support,
you'll likely wake up with an aching back.
7
Hybrid Mattresses
A Hybrid Mattress combines a steel coil support
system with one or more types of foam, such as
polyurethane foam, memory foam, or latex foam, as
well as foams that contain gel or other
materials. Pros Better at contouring to your
body than more plain innerspring mattresses. It
has a fairly unique feel that some people really
like. Cons Hybrids are a little more expensive
than other mattresses of a similar overall
quality. Youre paying, in part, for the fact
that hybrids are the latest fad in
mattresses. Everybody seems to be calling their
mattress a hybrid these days, so you might have
to sift through a few mattresses that
arent really hybrids to find one that is.

Pillow top Mattress
Pillow top and euro top mattresses are designed
for those who want an extra layer of padding on
top of the mattress. Both pillow top and euro top
mattresses are essentially the same, and many
companies use the terms interchangeably which has
diluted the differentiation the terms once
had. Technically, there is a difference in
design but functionally, the difference is
insignificant. Both designs sew an extra layer of
padding on top of the mattress to add softness,
take the edge off, or fine-tune the comfort of
the sleeping surface. Pros Pillow-top
mattresses have an extra layer of padding between
the sleeper and the mattress springs, making it
possible for even firm mattresses to feel more
soft and comfortable.  Cons Some people find
the soft pillow-top mattress to be extremely hot.
Excessive warmth can be particularly problematic
when the pillow top is made with memory foam or
other dense materials.
9
Adjustable foundation
These beds are able to bend and elevate at
varying angles. Different types of mattresses can
be used on an adjustable bed memory foam,
latex, or air. An adjustable foundation allows
you to bend, elevate or lower various parts of
the sleep surface. Many adjustable foundations
have dual controls that each partner can use to
adjust the sleep surface elevation to meet their
individual needs. Most adjustable foundations are
powered by an electric motor, but some are
manually adjusted. They are designed to look like
a conventional foundation when placed in the
fully horizontal position. For best results,
adjustable foundations should be used with a
mattress designed for that purpose. Pros For
people who have difficulty getting in and out of
bed or who like to watch television in bed,
Adjustables can make life easier by moving you
closer to where you need to be. Cons If you
suffer from sleep apnea, sleeping flat can make
the condition worse by cutting off airways and
causing the tongue to fall into the back of the
throat,
10
Gel Mattress
Gel mattresses use a type of foam that contains
gel in the products support system, upholstery
layers, or both. The gel is added to the foam
using deferent types of technology. The gel foam
can offer consumers different comfort, feel and
heat dissipation features. Pros Gel mattresses
have excellent conformation properties and they
stay cool. Cons Limited consumer and product
testing make this a somewhat risky purchase.
Also, because gel can shift, the product design
needs to include a method to contain or stabilize
the gel.
11
Latex Mattress
Latex mattresses are made from either natural or
synthetic rubber, and are known for providing a
very firm, bouncy support that is uniform
throughout the bed. These type of mattresses use
latex foam as the support system, in the
upholstery layers, or both. Latex may be made
from plant or petroleum-based materials. Pros "Q
uite frankly, I think one of the best materials
is latex. These mattresses being very firm and
supportive, but also for providing comfort
similar to memory foam. Unlike the memory foam
mattresses, however, Latex pushes back,
ultimately providing more support. Cons If you
don't like the feel of a firm mattress, latex is
probably not the right choice for you.
12
Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam mattresses use a high density
polyurethane foam as the support system, in the
upholstery layer, or both.  This foam has
properties that allow it to contour closely to
the shape of the sleeper. Memory foam mattresses
are growing in popularity. They are made of
layers of different densities of foam that
respond to weight and temperature, and are known
for comfort because they contour to the specific
shape of your body. Memory foam toppers are also
available. Pros By molding to the shape of your
body as your weight shifts through the night,
memory foam reduces pressure points, and relieves
pain. Memory foam also absorbs movement, so if
you sleep with a partner, you're not likely to be
disturbed by his tossing and turning. Cons One
of the biggest complaints with memory foam
mattresses is that because these mattresses are
temperature sensitive, softening and molding with
your body heat, they can make you feel extremely
hot during the night.
13
Waterbed Mattress
A waterbed mattress is the mattress used in a
waterbed. It is a large, plastic, reinforced bag
with a screw top so water can be pumped in. Water
beds tend to be cold, so most users either heat
them with an electronic heater placed directly
under the mattress, or use a thermal layer to
protect the sleeper from the temperature.
Traditional hard sided waterbed mattresses are
used with wooden frames, either on the floor or
on platforms. New soft sided waterbed mattresses
can be used without a frame. Pros Many users
find waterbeds to be fun. The water sloshes back
and forth in response the movements of the user,
and this can be hypnotic and comforting. Cons
Water beds are heavy and not suitable for use in
all structures make sure you home can support
the weight before you install one. Many apartment
buildings and rental units do not allow them.
Some users find the rocking motion disturbing,
and the movement of one member of a couple
usually felt by the sleeping partner.
14
Air Bed Mattresses
We're not talking about the blow-up mattresses
you put your holiday guests on for a few days.
Higher-end air beds look like a standard
innerspring mattress, but use air-filled chambers
instead of coils, and are covered by a foam layer
on top. Air beds have long been used for patients
with spinal cord injuries who are lying in bed
for a long time. They can be adjusted so they
don't continue to press on the same areas of the
body, which helps to avoid skin breakdown in
patients who can't move. Pros Couples who have
dramatic differences in their individual
preference for comfort and firmness levels might
do very well with an air mattress. The reason is
that the firmness of each side of the bed can be
altered. Like latex and memory foam, you can also
find air toppers for your mattress. Cons People
sometimes fail to make their air bed firm enough
and wake up with back aches. Less sophisticated
air mattresses also pop up on one side when you
sit on the opposite end.
