  • Electrical
  • UPS Replacement
  • 160KVA UPS to be moved from NSC237
  • doubling our current UPS capacity in SLB29
  • Electrical Distribution upgrade within facility
  • Move to 208V distribution within all racks
  • Improved power efficiency and economies
  • HVAC upgrades
  • Replace one A/C with New, larger AC

10
SLB Data Center Upgrade
  • Scope
  • Monitoring
  • Improved environmental and facilities monitoring
  • equivalent to that in SSB
  • Remote Management
  • Replace legacy Analog KVM with IP enabled KVM

11
SLB Data Center Upgrade
  • Current Status
  • Asset inventory and initial Asset classification
    complete
  • 8 servers being moved to SSB on March 29th as a
1st step in risk mitigation for services supplied
    by these hosts.

Infrastructure Updates
  • TUMS March 25th

13
Email Outlook Connector
  • Stats 586 Users -gt 395 Converted (67)
  • Sun provided a Calendar/Connector SME onsite for
    1 week
  • Outcomes
  • Connector application is an add-on to Outlook.
  • Policy changes within the outlook application
    could disable the connector add-on
  • Re-enabling the add-on presents a faster
    recovery path to some problems

14
Email Outlook Connector
  • Reoccurring Meeting Bug
  • Documented and repeatable instances where a
reoccurring meeting is deleted in outlook.
  • Instance is observed to disappear from outlook
    and CE.
  • However, after a refresh of the associated
calendar in Outlook deleted instance reappears
  • Deleted instance does not reappear in CE
  • If you encounter this bug please advise ITS by
    emailing connector-support_at_uwo.ca

15
Data Deduplication Project
  • Completed Deployment
  • All Clients migrated to tape backups (to clear
    disk)
  • Upgraded FalconStor Virtual Tape Library (new
    server)
  • Installed FalconStor Single Instance Repository
  • Installed new disk and reorganized old disk
  • VTL has 9 TB
  • SIR has 32 TB
  • All client backups migrated to new environment
  • Fine tuned the deduplication process
  • Some Compressed backups moved back to tape
  • Currently averaging 151 or better compression

16
Data Deduplication Infrastructure
17
Data Deduplication Process
  • Backup taken over night written to virtual tapes
    on the VTL
  • Clone process runs in morning reads virtual tapes
on VTL and writes them to physical tapes in L700
    tape library (In Engineering)
  • Deduplication process run in afternoons reads all
FULL Virtual tapes and writes only unique blocks
    to Single Instance Repository
  • Virtual tape replaced with a virtual index tape

18
Tier II Storage
  • New storage model being designed to supplement
    the
  • Current production SAN
  • More affordable storage
  • Larger capacity
  • Not as redundant
  • Limited performance
  • Alternative backup model

19
Tier II hardware and software
  • 2 Sun X4500 servers purchased
  • 48 x 500GB Sata drives (16 TB usable under RAID
    60)
  • Currently running Solaris 10 which offers
  • ZFS, NFS, iSCSI, Compression
  • SnapShots, Replication, Thin provisioning
  • Investigating OpenSolaris which adds
  • CIFS, WebDav
  • (Rumors Data Deduplication in near future)

20
Tier II alternative Backup model
  • Uses Snapshots and Replication
  • Snapshot taken ever night
  • Snapshot is replicated over to 2nd disk array
  • Maintain nightly snapshots on both arrays back 56
    days
  • Can tailor the backups to the data
  • Static data backed up once/week
  • Active data backed up multiple time a day
