Title: About My Journal Publications

1
About My
Journal Publications
  • By
  • ADEBAYO, A.H.
  • DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (BIOCHEMISTRY
    UNIT)
  • COVENANT UNIVERSITY, OTA.

2
RESEARCH INTERESTS
  • BIOCHEMICAL/CLINICAL TOXICOLOGY
  • ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY
  • (MEDICINAL PLANT TOXICOLOGY)

3
MOTIVATION INTO MEDICINAL PLANT RESEARCH
  • Two Incidences stimulated my interest into
    medicinal plant research.
  • 1. The Port Harcourt Incidence In 1999, 10
people died after receiving medication from
    Traditional Herbal Practitioners.
  • 2. The Calabar Incidence In 2000, 7 people
died after being treated for Diabetes Mellitus
    with Medicinal plants.

4
IMPLICATIONS
  • Some Medicinal Plants contain active substances
which may be toxic to the body.
  • There is also the need to determine suitable
therapeutic dosage of any plant that will be used
    for medicinal purposes.
  • These and many other reasons stimulated my
    interest in Medicinal plant Research.

5
PUBLISHED JOURNAL ARTICLES
  • 1.The Effects of Ethanolic Leaf Extract of
    Commiphora africana (Burseraceae) on Lipid
Profile in Rats. International Journal of
    Pharmacology 20062 (6) 618-622.
  • 2. Anti Ulcer Activity of the Aqueous Leaf
Extract of Ficus thonningii Moraceae (Chinese
Banyan). Journal of Medicine in the Tropics 2006
    8 (1) 27-32.

Summary of Work.
  • Two of the papers were generated from my MSc.
    Thesis.
  • The title of my first paper is The Effects of
Ethanolic Leaf Extract of Commiphora africana
(Burseraceae) on Lipid Profile in Rats.

9
Commiphora africana
  • Commiphora africana is a medicinal plant and
    belongs to
  • Family Burseraceae
  • Group Myrrh
  • It is used by traditional healers for the
    treatment of
  • Wounds
  • Menstrual pain
  • Painful Swelling
  • Typhoid Fever

10
Local Names of the Plant
  • In Hausa, it is called, Dashi
  • The Fulanis called it, Badadi and,
  • The Kanuris called it, Kabi.
  • The plant is not common in the southern part of
    the country.

11
Effects of Leaf Extract of Commiphora africana
on Lipid Profile in Rats
  • Aim To determine the effects of ethanolic Leaf
extract of Commiphora africana on some Lipid
    profiles (Total Cholesterol, TG, HDL-Cholesterol
    and LDL-Cholesterol) in Rats.

12
Justification of Study
  • Insufficient information with regards to the
effects of Commiphora africana on Lipid profiles
    and
  • The search for suitable medicinal plants among
the Commiphora species against the high incidence
    of cardiovascular disorders becomes imperative.

13
Experimentation
  • Study was conducted on experimental rats (albino
wistar rats) by administering graded doses of the
leaf extract intraperitoneally for a period of 10
    days.
  • Both acute and sub-acute studies were conducted.
  • The rats were anaesthetized with ether and the
blood taken for Cholesterol, TG, HDL and LDL
    Cholesterol analyses.

14
Results
  • Showed significant decrease in
  • Total Cholesterol (plt0.05),
  • Triglycerides (plt0.01), and
  • LDL- Cholesterol (plt0.05)
  • Significantly increased
  • HDL-Cholesterol (plt0.01).
  • in Serum samples.

15
Conclusion
  • Commiphora africana contains antilipidemic
properties and therefore may be used for the
treatment of cardiovascular disorders and other
related disorders within the safety limit.

16
Effects of Leaf Extract of Commiphora africana
on Rat Liver and Kidney Functions
  • Aim of the Study To determine the toxicological
risk of the consumption of the plant as
    antimicrobial and antilipidemic agents by
  • Measuring biochemical markers of liver and kidney
    functions in the rats sera.
  • Extracting the liver and kidney for
    histopathological assessment.

17
Justification of Study
  • Commiphora africana is widely used in the
northern part of Nigeria by the traditional
Medicine Practitioner for the treatment of
    typhoid fever and other ailments.
  • Absence of relevant information on the safety of
    the plant through appropriate biochemical
    parameters necessitated this research.

18
Experimentation
  • Study was conducted on experimental rats by
    intraperitoneally administering graded doses of
the extract for a period of 10 days.
  • Both acute and sub-acute studies were conducted.
  • Blood samples were then taken from rats after
anaesthesia in ether for LFTs and Kidney function
    test.
  • The rats livers and kidneys were removed for
    histopathological studies.

19
Results of Study
  • Results showed no damage to the liver and kidney
at lower conc. (lt100mg/ml). but at higher conc.,
the kidney was damaged (i.e. glomerulonephritis
    and proliferation of mesanger cells).

20
Recommendation
  • The Commiphora africana may therefore be used as
antimicrobial and antilipidemic agents within the
    acceptable limit of safety.
  • For further details, access it on- line

The Place of Covenant University
  • CU provided conducive environment (i.e. Serene
and 24 Hrs electricity and water supply).
  • All publications were done via the internet
facilities of the School at no cost.
  • The research base of CU is being projected.
  • The God Factor.
