Title: Crane Training and Safety

1
Crane Training and Safety
  • Joseph Burger, MIT
  • AMS02 Integration Meeting
  • CERN, 12-13 March, 2007

2
Required Safety Courses
  • Everyone who works at CERN must take the Basic
Safety Course after registering with the Users
Office and getting your magnetic ID card
  • Taking the course means watching a video which
lasts 50 minutes, and verifying your presence by
reading in your ID card at the end of the course

3
Required Safety Courses
  • The course is given in Building 55, at the main
    entrance to CERN, Meyrin
  • It is given every day, Monday through Friday, at
1000 and 1500 in English, and at 900 and 1400
    in French
  • More information can be found at
    http//safety-commission.web.cern.ch/safety-commis
    sion/SC-site/index.html

4
Other safety Courses
  • Some people may want to take additional CERN
courses for operating lifting equipment (cranes
up to 10 Ton capacity, or lifting platforms) or
    working at heights.
  • No course is needed for operating the air pads

5
Cranes for AMS02
  • We have two cranes
  • A 30T crane with lifting height of 7.28m, needed
for high operations outside the clean room or in
the area with the removable roof. Only CERN crane
    operators can use this crane
  • A 10T crane with lifting height of 4.80-4.87m,
inside our clean room. We can operate this crane
ourselves after taking a CERN course

6
10T Crane Operators
  • Peter Berges, Maurice Vergain, and Valentin
Vinogradov are already authorized to operate the
    10T crane
  • Subdetector groups may want to have one of their
members trained to use the 10T crane to handle
    their own equipment
  • I have sent an e-mail asking for nominations

7
10T Crane Course
  • The crane course is given once a month, lasts two
days, and is for a maximum of 8 people, and is
    generally signed up in advance
  • I have asked for a separate course, just for AMS,
using our 10T crane in 867
  • This has been set for the first dates available,
    27-28 March.
  • We may want to postpone this if it interferes
with clean room construction or preparation for
    shipping the STA to Munich
  • CERN wants to charge us 1600 to run the course

8
People to Use 10T Crane
  • I have received the following names of people to
be trained to use the 10T crane
  • Robert Becker MIT
  • Sauro Bizzaglia Tracker Group, Perugia
  • Joseph Burger MIT
  • Franck Cadoux LAPP
  • Delfino Cosson Tracker Group, Perugia
  • Corrado Gargiulo MIT
  • Vassily Plyaskin MIT
  • Manfred Willenbrock Tracker Group, Geneva
  • Gongming Xin Thermal, SDU
  • Fayi Yan Thermal, SDU
  • At most 8 can take the next crane course

9
Lifting Platform Training
  • We need a lifting platform or cherry picker for
roof removal and replacement and probably some
other operations, such as changing lights over
    the rotation stand
  • A license is needed (CERN course). CERN crane
operators have one, as well as Valentin
    Vinogradov.

10
Working at Heights
  • Work at heights must be done from a scaffold or
    other platform with a railing.
  • Work on a ladder is not allowed. Ladders can only
be used to get to a working place, or if there is
no other possibility to do the work.

11
Work on Clean Room Roof
  • We should normally have no need to go on the
    clean room roof
  • Removable roof panel manipulation is done with a
special lifting rig on the crane, and the crane
is operated from a lifting platform outside the
    clean room.
  • Nevertheless, if necessary, it is allowed for a
single person with a toolbox (up to 150kg) to
work on any one of the fixed parts of the roof
with a harness and special attachment clamp.
Access is by a lifting platform.
  • No work is permitted atop the removable roof
    panels
  • A special training course is needed to work on
    the roof with a harness

12
Hours for 30T Crane Use
  • CERN crane operators are normally available
Monday through Friday, from 800 to 1200 and
    from 1300 to 1700
  • It is best to order them by EDH (electronic
    document handling) in advance
  • Overtime and work on weekends (at least Saturday)
can be arranged (we will have to pay)

13
Requirements for 10T Crane Coursesee
http//sc-gs.web.cern.ch/sc-gs/gs_ms/ms/freq20top
ics/te_mc_FT_users.htm
  • Medical certificate (on link above) that you are
fit. The CERN medical department is overloaded,
but they will give you a certificate if you have
recently had an exam for a radiation badge
  • A form (on link above) signed by a representative
of your institute that they allow CERN to let you
    use the cranes
  • Sign up for the particular course
(Pontier-élingueur, and date) via EDH (electronic
    document handling)at http//cta.cern.ch/cta2/f?p3
    0077336351754334948786NO
  • Apply via EDH for access category AC-PE (10T
    cranes) at https//edh.cern.ch/Document/ACRQ

14
Other Safety Requirements
  • We may need to take/arrange special training
later due to use of the superconducting magnet
  • cryogenics
  • asphyxiating gas,
  • magnetic field,
  • stored energy
