  • Cellular Organization multicellular vertebrate
    with endoskeletons made of cartilage.
  • Reproduction sexual external fertilization.
    Most rays are ovoviviparous bearing live young in
    "litters" of five to ten. The female holds the
    embryos in the womb without a placenta. Instead,
    the embryos absorb nutrients from a yolk sac, and
    after the sac is depleted the mother provides
    uterine milk.
  • Method of Obtaining Food Feed primarily on
    mollusks and crustaceans. Cannot see prey. Use
    smell and electro-receptors to sense prey.
    Crushing plates in mouth break apart shells.
  • Special Notes/Adaptations When attacked by
    predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in
    its tail whips up. The stinger usually breaks off
    in the wound and will grow back.
