Crimes Against Children Research Center - study
  • 24 million children between the ages 10 and 17
    use the internet regularly.
  • One out of every five of these children receive a
    sexual solicitation.
  • One in every four received unwanted pictures of
naked people or people having sex.
  • One in every 33 received an aggressive sexual
solicitation asking the recipient to meet, phone
    or accept gifts.

4
A predators goal is to meet with these kids
  • Many of the kids inadvertently leave themselves
    vulnerable to sexual predators.
  • Through blogs and messages, kids identify what
school they go to what activities they
participate in and pictures of themselves.
  • They will use whatever information they can to
pose as a friend or someone with common
    interest.

5
How can technology keep our children safe online?
  • Use the content filter in Internet
  • Explorer to block offensive web pages.
  • Purchase advanced Internet software to protect
    kids from harmful content.

6
What is filtering software?
  • Filtering software allows you to control
  • where your kids go online by blocking
  • sites that are dangerous.
  • Filtering software is easy to setup and
  • use.
  • Filtering software should be used not as
  • a cure all but as a tool to help protect our

  • kids online.

Internet Use Safety Tips
  • Keep your passwords private, even from your best
friend! Your online service will never ask for
them, so neither should anyone else.
  • Use only your Log-in Name and/or e-mail address
    when chatting or sending e-mail.
  • Never give out personal information like your
    name, address, or phone number.
  • Always delete unknown e-mail attachments. They
    can contain destructive viruses.
  • Remember that nothing you write on the Web is
completely private -- including e-mail. So be
careful and think about what you type and who you
    tell.

17
Internet Use Safety Tips
  • People are not always as nice, cute, or funny as
they may sound online. Never make plans to meet
    an online "friend" in person.
  • Tell your parents if you come across something
    that makes you feel uncomfortable.
  • Keep the computer in a central location in your
    home WITH SOUND ON.
  • Never arrange a meeting with someone you have met
    online.
  • Never send a person your picture or anything else
without first checking with your parents.

18
How do I know theres a problem?
  • Your child is spending large amounts of time on
    line, especially at night
  • You find pornography on your childs computer
  • Your child receives phone calls from men you
dont know or is making calls, sometimes long
distance, to numbers you dont recognize.

19
  • Your child receives mail, gifts or packages from
    someone you dont know
  • Your child turns the computer monitor off or
quickly changes the screen when you come in the
    room
  • Your child has become withdrawn from the family
  • Your child is using an online account belonging
    to someone else.
