Title: Gifts of Israel for the Tabernacle

1
  • Gifts of Israel for the Tabernacle
  • Exodus 3522
  • And they came, both men and women, as many as
were willing hearted, and brought bracelets,
and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels
of gold and every man that offered offered an
offering of gold unto the LORD.

2
  • Over-plus of Gifts
  • Exodus 365
  • And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people
bring much more than enough for the service of
the work, which the LORD commanded to make.

3
  • Davids Gifts for the Temple
  • I Chronicles 293,4
  • Moreover, because I have set my affection to the
house of my God, I have of mine own proper good,
of gold and silver, which I have given to the
house of my God, over and above all that I have
    prepared for the holy house,
  • Even three thousand talents of gold, of the
gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of
refined silver, to overlay the walls of the
    houses withal

4
  • A Poor Widows Offering
  • Luke 21 1 - 4
  • And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting
    their gifts into the treasury.
  • And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in
    thither two mites.
  • And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this
poor widow hath cast in more than they all
  • For all these have of their abundance cast in
unto the offerings of God but she of her penury
hath cast in all the living that she had.

5
  • Boaz
  • Ruth 215
  • And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz
commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean
even among the sheaves, and reproach her not

6
  • The Good Samaritan
  • Luke 1034
  • But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came
where he was and when he saw him, he had
    compassion on him,
  • And went to him, and bound up his wounds,
pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own
beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care
    of him.
  • And on the morrow when he departed, he took out
two pence, and gave them to the host, and said
unto him, Take care of him and whatsoever thou
spendest more, when I come again, I will repay
    thee.

7
  • The Origin of Sacrifice
  • The universal prevalence of sacrifice shows it to
have been primeval, or deeply rooted in the
    instincts of humanity.
  • Primeval means belonging to the first or earliest
age or ages original or ancient

8
  • Whether it was first enjoined by an external
command, or whether it was based on that sense of
sin and lost communion with God which is stamped
by his hand on the heart of man, is a historical
    question which cannot be determined.

9
  • Ante Mosaic History of Sacrifice
  • The sacrifices of Cain and Abel were more to
worship God than to atone for sin.

10
Noahs sacrifice did not appear to be one for
forgiveness but more of a covenant offering.
  • Genesis 820
  • And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD
  • and took of every clean beast, and of every clean
fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
  • And the LORD smelled a sweet savour and the LORD
said in his heart, I will not again curse the
ground any more for man's sake for the
imagination of man's heart is evil from his
youth neither will I again smite any more every
thing living, as I have done.

11
  • Jacobs Sacrifice to God were more of a beginning
of a covenant rather than a sacrifice for sin.
  • Genesis 3152
  • This heap be witness, and this pillar be
witness, that I will not pass over this heap to
thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap
and this pillar unto me, for harm.
  • The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God
of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob
sware by the fear of his father Isaac.
  • Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and
called his brethren to eat bread and they did
eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.
  • And early in the morning Laban rose up, and
kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed
them and Laban departed, and returned unto his
    place.

12
In the Burnt Offerings of Job for his children
and his friends we for the first time find the
expression of the desire for expiation for sin.
Job 15
  • And it was so, when the days of their feasting
were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified
them, and rose up early in the morning, and
offered burnt offerings according to the number
of them all for Job said, It may be that my sons
have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus
    did Job continually. Job
    42.8
  • Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and
seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer
up for yourselves a burnt offering and my
servant Job shall pray for you for him will I
accept lest I deal with you after your folly,
in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which
is right, like my servant Job.

13
  • Moses before Pharaoh
  • Exodus 1025
  • And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices
and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto
    the LORD our God.

14
  • The Sacrifices of the Mosaic Period
  • These are inaugurated by the offering of the
Passover. The Passover indeed is unique in its
character but it is clear that the idea of
salvation from death by means of sacrifice is
brought out in it with a distinctness before
    unknown.

15
  • Offerings
  • Burnt - Self-dedicatory
  • Drink Accompanies meal offering
  • Freewill
  • Meal, or Meat Thanksgiving
  • Peace The eating of the flesh by the sacrificer
  • Sin - expiatory
  • Trespass - expiatory
  • Heave or Wave Accompanies peace offerings

16
  • Appointed order of
  • the sacrifices
  • First came the sin offering to
  • prepare access to God
  • Second the burnt offering to mark their
dedication to service. This can only be offered
after the sin offering was done.
  • Third the meat offering of thanksgiving Hence the
sacrificial system was fixed in all its parts
until He should come whom it typified.

17
DiscipleshipLesson 10 Giving
  • What is the Meaning of Giving and What Are My
    Responsibilities in this Area?

18
  • Introduction Giving is an extremely
    controversial subject in Christianity today
largely due to the severe pressures exerted on
Gods people to give to so many worthy causes.

19
  • This is perhaps one of the most misunderstood
    subjects in Christianity.
  • Before you can properly understand the nature of
New Testament giving, you must understand one
fact clearly God does not need your money. He
    owns everything.

20
  • This lesson will deal with the Christians
responsibility in stewardship of his life as well
    as his resources.

21
  • I. Before any giving can be truly proper, you
must be willing to give yourself first.

22
  • A. God bought you with a price, His blood, and
    you belong to Him.

23
  • 1. I Corinthians 619-20

What? Know ye not that your body is the temple
of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have
of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are
bought with a price therefore glorify God in
your body, and in your spirit, which are Gods.
24
  • B. God commands you to present your body as a
living sacrifice, not just your pocketbook.

25
  • 1. Romans 121 says,

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God,
which is your reasonable service.
26
  • C. A willing mind and heart with a life committed
to service to God must precede financial giving
in order for God to bless it.

27
II Corinthians 83-5, 12.
  • 3 For to their power, I bear record, yea, and
beyond their power they were willing of
    themselves
  • 4 Praying us with much intreaty that we would
receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship
of the ministering to the saints.

28
II Corinthians 83-5, 12.
  • 5 And this they did, not as we hoped, but first
gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by
    the will of God.
  • 12 For it there be first a willing mind, it is
accepted according to that a man hath, and not
according to that he hath not.

29
  • II. What is the reason for my giving?

30
  • A. Giving proves the sincerity of your love for
    Jesus Christ.

31
  • 1. II Corinthians 88 says,

I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of
the forwardness of others, and to prove the
sincerity of your love.
32
  • B. Giving develops an attitude of grace. It
takes no special talents or abilities to give,
    only grace.

Talents
33
  • II Corinthians 86-7

6 Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had
begun, so he would also finish in you the same
grace also. 7 Therefore, as ye abound in every
thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge,
and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see
that ye abound in this grace also.
34
  • II Corinthians 98
  • 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward
you that ye, always having all sufficiency in
all things, may abound to every good work

35
  • C. Giving is an investment in eternal riches and
gets your eyes off of earthly riches, which will
    fade away .

36
  • 1. Philippians 417 says,

Not because I desire a gift but I desire fruit
that may abound to your account.
37
  • Matthew 619-21.

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon
earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and
where thieves break through and steal 20 But
lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where
neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where
thieves do not break through nor steal
38
  • Matthew 619-21.

21 For where your treasure is, there will your
heart be also.
39
  • D. The person who benefits most from your giving
    is YOU.

40
  • 1. Acts 2035 says,

I have showed you all things, how that so
laboring, ye ought to support the weak, and to
remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he
said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
41
  • III. Where am I to give?

42
  • A. Your primary responsibility is to your local
church. All giving in the New Testament is done
within the context of a local church ministry

43
  • I Corinthians 161-2.

1 Now concerning the collection for the saints,
as I have given order to the churches of Galatia,
even so do ye. 2 Upon the first day of the week
let every one of you lay by him in store, as God
hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings
when I come.
44
  • B. Obviously, anyone is free to give to causes
outside the local church, and God may even use
and bless it. However, it is the local church
which is central to Gods plan. Any giving
outside of it should never be done at the expense
of what God would have you do in your church.
This is equally true of time and service.

45
  • IV. What is my money used for?

46
  • A. The support of the leaders of the church.

47
  • 1. I Corinthians 913-14 says,

Do ye not know that they which minister about
holy things love of the things of the temple? And
they which wait at the altar are partakers with
the altar? Even so hath the Lord ordained that
they which preach the gospel should love of the
gospel.
48
  • Galatians 66

6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate
unto him that teacheth in all good things.
49
  • 3. I Timothy
  • 517-18

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy
of double honor, especially they who labor in the
word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, Thou
shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the
corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
50
  • B. Other works of God supported through your
    church.

51
  • Philippians 415-16.

15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the
beginning of the gospel, when I departed from
Macedonia, no church communicated with me as
concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. 16
For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again
unto my necessity.
52
  • C. Support of those within the church body who
are unable to support themselves, and who have
proved themselves faithful under the New
    Testament guidelines.

53
  • Acts 61

1 And in those days, when the number of the
disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring
of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because
their widows were neglected in the daily
ministration.
54
  • D. To meet the general needs as determined by the
    leadership of your church.

55
  • Acts 1127-30.

27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem
unto Antioch. 28 And there stood up one of them
named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that
there should be great dearth throughout all the
world which came to pass in the days of Claudius
Caesar.
56
  • Acts 1127-30.

29 Then the disciples, every man according to his
ability, determined to send relief unto the
brethren which dwelt in Judaea 30 Which also
they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands
of Barnabas and Saul.
57
  • E. To assist in the world-wide spread of the
    Gospel (World Missions).

58
  • Philippians 415-16.

15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the
beginning of the gospel, when I departed from
Macedonia, no church communicated with me as
concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. 16
For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again
unto my necessity.
59
  • V. What am I supposed to give?

60
  • You are supposed to give your life. Your giving
is to be out of a willing heart and because you
    love the Lord Jesus Christ.

61
  • Let us examine amounts of giving in the Bible

62
  • A. The tithein the Old Testament, the Jews
were required by their religious law to give a
    certain percentage of their income.

63
  • This tithe was one-tenth of a persons income.
In addition, the Jews gave freewill offerings for
various other works of God, bringing their total
giving to well over ten percent.

64
  • II Chronicles 3111-12.

11 Then Hezekiah commanded to prepare chambers in
the house of the LORD and they prepared them, 12
And brought in the offerings and the tithes and
the dedicated things faithfully over which
Cononiah the Levite was ruler, and Shimei his
brother was the next.
65
  • Deuteronomy 125-7

5 But unto the place which the LORD your God
shall choose out of all your tribes to put his
name there, even unto his habitation shall ye
seek, and thither thou shalt come
66
  • Deuteronomy 125-7

6 And thither ye shall bring your burnt
offerings, and your sacrifices, and your tithes,
and heave offerings of your hand, and your vows,
and your freewill offerings, and the firstlings
of your herds and of your flocks
67
  • 7 And there ye shall eat before the LORD your
God, and ye shall rejoice in all that ye put your
hand unto, ye and your households, wherein the
LORD thy God hath blessed thee.

68
  • B. The church is not bound by the letter of the
Old Testament law. However, the principles of
the Old Testament establishes patterns for our
    relationship with God.

69
  • I Corinthians 1011

11 Now all these things happened unto them for
ensamples and they are written for our
admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are
come.
70
  • 2. Romans 154 says,

For whatsoever things were written aforetime
were written for our learning, that we through
patience and comfort of the scriptures might have
hope.
71
  • VI. The New Testament principles of giving are
    applied in three areas

72
  • A. StructureA young Christian should establish
discipline in his life in all areas. In giving,
the principle of ten percent can help provide
    that structure.

73
  • B. Cheerful GivingAs an individual grows in the
Lord, he will develop an attitude to go beyond
structures. The grace of cheerful giving then
becomes a reality in his life.

74
  • 1. the New Testament principles of giving are
summarized in II Corinthians 97 which says,
  • Every man according as he purposed in his heart,
so let him give not grudgingly, or of necessity
for God loveth a cheerful giver.

75
  • 2. As a man purposed in his heart. You giving
    is between you and God.

76
  • 3. Not grudgingly. If your giving is done with
the wrong attitude, you will not experience Gods
    blessings.

77
  • 4. Or of necessity. You are not bound by the
    tithe or any other law.

78
  • 5. For God loveth a cheerful giver.

79
  • C. Sacrificial GivingChristian maturity will
result in sacrificial giving. When a person
gives beyond his power to give, it costs him
something. At this point, the grace of giving is
    maximized in his life.

80
  • 1. I Corinthians 83 says,

For to their power, I bear record, yea, and
beyond their power they were willing of
themselves.
81
  • VII. Other principles of giving.

82
  • A. Proportionate givinggive as God has prospered
you. Do not concern yourself with the giving of
others, just give according to the amount God has
    blessed you with.

83
  • 1. II Corinthians 812 says,

For if there be first a willing mind, it is
accepted according to that a man hath, and not
according to that he hath not.
84
  • B. True New Testament giving goes much further
than a simple tithe. It is turning over
complete control of your life and resources to
Jesus Christ. If God has control of your life,
he will have control of our resources.

85
  • 1. Matthew 633 says,

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his
righteousness and all these things shall be
added unto you
86
  • VIII. Basic Questions

87
  • A. When do I give?

88
  • 1. I Corinthians 162 says,

Upon the first day of the week let every one of
you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered
him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
89
  • 2. The word store means store-house which means
    Gods house of worship.

90
  • B. How much do I give?

91
  • 1. Malachi 310 says,

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse,
that there may be meat in mine house, and prove
me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I
will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour
you out a blessing, that there shall not be room
enough to receive it.
92
  • 2. Tithe means tenth.

93
  • 3. From an in depth study of tithing, the place
to start was a tenth. However, most gave more
    than a tenth.

94
  • 4. In a church that offers the Faith Promise
Missions plan, your commitment should be above
    the tithe.

95
  • 5. Other offerings should be above the tithe.

96
  • One last thought. When you give according to
Biblical principles, you will manifest the nature
of the Lord Jesus Christ in your life, resulting
in God being glorified through you.

97
  • What was Gods nature? Gods essential nature is
giving, manifested in the person of the Lord
    Jesus Christ.
  • Lev 2732
  • And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the
flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the
rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.

98
  • What is meant by the term, Faith Promise?
  • Perhaps the best way to answer that question is
to insert the term into a sentence - "By FAITH I
    PROMISE to give - - - - - per week to world
missions." The promise to give is based upon the
faith to receive. It is NOT a promise to give
something you already have. It doesn't take faith
to give what you already have. But it does take
faith to promise to give what you don't have.
Faith Promise is simply claiming from the Lord an
amount of money which you do not have in order
that you might use it for World Missions.

99
  • How does Faith Promise relate to tithing?
  • The word "tithe," of course, means ten percent.
The Bible teaches tithing as the minimum of our
financial commitment to Christian ministries. The
tithes are presented to the Lord as an act of
obedience. But since the Christian is not limited
to this minimum, and since we have the
opportunity of living by faith, why not trust God
for more? After all, the evidence is that God is
anxious to respond to our faith, not just to our
    obedience.

100
  • There are thousands of illustrations. One of my
favorites is of a friend who was a new Christian
living on a fixed and limited income. Yet when he
heard of the Faith Promise concept of providing
for world missions, by faith he began to ask the
Lord for an amount beyond his natural ability to
give. Of course, he didn't know where the money
would come from, but was willing to trust the
Lord for it. Accordingly, he promised to give
what the Lord provided. A few weeks later, he was
to have his eyes examined and fully expected to
purchase a new pair of glasses. For this, he had
prepared and had saved the money. But for the
first time in several years, the examination
indicated that there was no need for new glasses.
Even though a new Christian, he immediately
recognized that this was God's provision in
response to his "Faith Promise" and the money for
the glasses went into world missions.

101
  • How do I know what God will provide through me?
  • Perhaps the best way to answer that question is
with another question "For how much are you
willing to trust Him?" Prayer and faith are the
two key factors in making this determination.

102
  • Is Faith Promise giving based on the Bible?
  • Yes. The Bible says, "the just shall live by
faith." The promises of God, as well as the
provisions of God, are received by faith.

103
  • ls there an illustration of Faith Promise given
    in the Bible?
  • There are many. By faith, Abraham offered Isaac
to the Lord. Perhaps you remember that story in
Genesis 22. So miraculous was God's provision in
response to Abraham's faith that Abraham named
the place of the offering "Jehovah Jireh."
Translated, that means "the Lord provides" or
"Jehovah seeth." He sees the provision before we
do - and we see the provision as we act in faith.

104
  • How do I get started?
  • Determine through prayer the amount you believe
the Lord wants to provide through you. Pray daily
for the provision of that amount and stay alert
to the numerous ways the Lord will provide extra
    income, reduced expenses, etc.
