  • The background of GanaChetana
  • Working in the 20 villages of Harichandanpur and
    Bansapal blocks in Keonjhar district of Orissa.
  • Working in this remote area of Orissa for the
    last 10 years.

  • GC have recently been selected as facilitators
    for northern Orissa, of a nation-wide program on
    Natural Forest Resource Management
  • Organization led by Mr. Mohan Mahanta.

  • The part of Phase-I is already funded by
    AID-Columbus. (2000).
  • AID-Austin needs to fund 2700 for phase-I.
  • Phase-II and Phase-III approvals will be decided
    depending on the status of Phase-I.

Summary
  • GC is working for the poorest of poor.
  • GC has good working relations with community and
    government bodies.
  • GC has good track record.
  • A chance for AID-Austin to work with NGO who is
    working for people who needs help most !

Questions raised in CSH 10/18
  • The focus of the project looks on the development
    of a few people (Volunteers NGO.)
  • Labor and builders will all be local, (currently
    6 laborers and a local builder involved in the
    construction of the Ashram foundation) 
  • Community GC to work together in the day to day
    running and experimenting with viable and
    alternative organic agricultural, pisciculture.
  • Short workshops will be held to disseminate the
    techniques to the broader community on regular
    basis.
  • The GC field staff will visit the villages to
    asses and advise the villagers on implementation
    of disseminated techniques.
  • Villagers will be able to avail organic seeds,
    planting material and loan tools etc.
  • How much do the villages earn on an average?
  • Less than US 10.00 per month

  • Status of current work next plans for Phase-I.
  • Foundation digging is under way. Brick making
    initial analysis done.
  • Green fence constructed around Ashram site.
    Planning for plantation of vegetables, spices,

  • When do they need next round of phase-I funding ?

  • Details about 6 contingency in budget.
  • The norm is between 6 to 10.

Multi Purpose Pond
  • Currently the pond each own by Gana Chetana. The
    Pond need to be renovated that needs an expenses
    of about Rs. 70,000.00 for perfect pisciculture
    purpose. The pond will harvest about 10 quintals
    of foil if renovation take place, the minimum
    income will be Rs. 40,000.00 in a year.
  • This year in the month of June 2004, 12,000 span
    (fish seed) has been placed in the pond. There is
    a chance of procuring 2 quintals of fish.
  • Have a plan to go for a small pond for the
    enlargement fish span which has a good demand in
    the area and that will earn more income. (About
    Rs. 10,000/- to Rs. 30,000/-)

NGO Sustainability
  • 1. Staff Development Mohan Mahanta and Sunita
    Padhi visited SRI (Society for Rural
    Industrialisation) Ranchi to see the development
    of pisciculture, Vermi compost, poultry, Duckery,
    Organic Farming, Fruit tree Orchard, Cane craft,
    Fruit Preservation, indegeneous roof making
    through self made asbestos and tile, spinning
    etc. Resource person or S. Sarkar. Duration July
    2003.
  • Sunita Padhi attended drought management
    programme, Organised by AFFRO, Bhubaneswar, Place
    - Jashipur, Mayurbhanja, Resource person Dr.
    Subas Sahoo, Manata Das, Dr. Srinibasan.
  • Harekrishna Naik visited HOPE, Bhubaneswar,
    master trainer on Organic farming, duration
    24.12.2003 to 26.12.2003, Resource person Dr.
    Basanta Bambetkar, Prof. Dr. Radha Mohan.
  • Sunita Padhi visited HOPE, Bhubaneswar towards
    training on Fruit PRocessing Preservation from
    12.08.2003 to 14.08.2003. Resource person Mr.
    Chabirani Sahoo.

Income Generation Programmes
  • (a)               For Gana Chetana - Maximum
    emphasis will be given for the renovation of the
    pond for the purpose of pisciculture and that
    will stand as the main source of income in the
    long run. Fish seed creation in this small pond
    will be an additional I.G.P. Variety of seed
    collection from the vegetable cultivation in the
    demonstration farm of Gana Chetana would be the
    second major IGP. The seeds will be sold in the
    weekly market of nearby places in the banner of
    GC.
  • (b)               For Community - At Community
    level the SHGs will make insence stick which has
    a good market at Ghatageon and Keonjhar. SHG has
    been producing spice powder and stitched leaf
    plate, which has been purchased by the business
    man from the doorstep of the village.

Community Benefit and Community Involvement
  • Informal sharing on demonstration farm with the
    people of different villages is a regular
    phenomenon of Gana Chetana.
  • People are interested to know the technique and
    uses of organic farming, with sharing of our
    experience.
  • The brick making of Gana Chetana in the
    demonstration farm has impact on the people. Few
    of the people are interested to construct their
    house with this bricks in the future.
  • About 64 SHGs are functioning in active where 720
    members are participating in regular basis.
  • In 15 villages 15 nos. of forest protection
    committee has been actively functioning since
    1993. About 1,000 hectors of forestland has been
    protected.
  • In 15 villages 15 nos. of agriculture committees
    are functioning systematically.
