Food Miles

• It is our aim to support local suppliers and make
  best use of produce and services found within the
  Sussex area. We recognise we still have a way to
  go so supplier location will continue to be part
  of our procurement decision making process which
  forms part of our commitment to the environment.
• The following graph is a benchmark exercise to
  plots the distance our suppliers travel to get to
  Sussex University. All measurements are in
  miles, as the crow flies.
• The ideal target would be to have all suppliers
  as close to the centre of the graph as possible.
• We will be working closely with our suppliers to
  encourage them to makes statements regarding
  their environmentally friendly practices and
  source from locally available fresh produce where
  possible.

Bramber Stores supplier location

• We presently have a total of 20 food suppliers
  delivering bulk supplies to our central stores.
  We then distribute from Bramber House to our
  campus cafés, reducing the number of delivery
  vans travelling on to campus. Thus reducing our
  carbon footprint.
• Of the 20 suppliers we use-
• 8 companies are located within 10 miles of the
  University, thats 40 of our suppliers.
• A further 5 companies are located within 20
  miles, equating to 65 of our suppliers.
• A further 5 companies travel between 20 and 60
  miles to get to the University, accounting
• so far for 85 of our Suppliers.
• Only two food suppliers presently used by the
  University catering services travel
• further than 60 miles to reach us.
• One company is a specialist sandwich supplier.
• One supplier, located the furthest away was
  happy to reduce the number road miles by
• delivering in pallet quantities, reducing
  deliveries to once per month.
