SCOPE OF THE SURVEY
  • Planned 60 enumeration areas with 1800
    questionnaires
  • 58 enumeration areas and 1770 household of which
    only 1623 interviews were successfully completed
  • Specific for UCC, 56 institutional questionnaires
    (CBO/NGO, schools, health units
    factories/businesses)

FINDINGS DEMOGRAPHICS
  • About 90 of Ugandas population rural
  • Among 83 of rural population and about 50 for
    urban population, household head earns below 55
    per month
  • A higher percentage of females (53) to males in
    the country
  • About 54 below 15 years, about 90 below 45
    years and 3.1 above 60 years
  • 97.7 of the rural and 59.9 of the urban
    populations have no access to electricity in
    their homes

  • Mobile phones are the predominant means of
    communication

MOBILE SERVICE
  • 2 of rural population and 16.6 among the urban
    population owned mobile phones with an overall
    penetration of about 3.
  • In terms of income, 0.9 in the lowest income
    group 6.2 and 15.9 in the middle and high
    income groups. There is significant usage among
    the lowest income group
  • Almost all the phones (99.7) are prepaid
  • Individual public phone expenditure in the rural
    areas is typically shs 1,500 per month, while
    that in urban areas is typically 2,500

  • Public and private pay phones are the principal
    means of communication for the majority of
    citizens.

  • The national penetration of computers is 0.7.
    Based on these figures there are only 182,000
    computers for the 25 million people in Uganda
  • The typical monthly bill for home internet
    connections is about Shs 85,000/
  • 4.2 and 0.1 of the urban and rural populations
    respectively have email addresses, about 60 of
    which are free subscription and the rest paid
    subscription or office. The national penetration
    is 0.4, or about 104,000 people out of a
    population of 26 million.

CONCLUSION
  • The survey underscored some of the challenges
    Uganda still faces in achieving equitable
    universal access.
  • The survey did inform the proposed new telecomm
    sector policy in Uganda in which human
    development targets have been recognized as the
    driver for infrastructure targets.
