Dear Diary,
Breakfast was great.
The fresh fruit brought by the Porter
Shakespearean thespian, Israel, was perfectly
sliced and diced into a dazzling array of shapes.
Along with the festive fruit was the homemade
pan dulce baked in the oven of that famous
baker, José from Los Fresnos.
3
Dr. Parson made two announcements Social this
Friday, 500pm at Ninfa Garcias home and one
mystery Where in the world is the breakfast/log
sign-in sheet?
First order of business was to shake things up
by forming new groups, according to Laurel.
Changing groups is nothing bad we meet new
people, learn new things Poor Angie F. was not
a happy camper she was going through Separation
Anxiety.
When her sister Alma was later told of the
incident, she was caught saying, My poor baby
sister. Shes going to be scarred for life.
4
Our first assignment was to look back at an
incident or event that changed who we are, then
we were to do a quick-write.
Lauras group was overjoyed and in unison they
all uttered, Oh goody.
Then, Laurel asked,
it depends on the prompt
sharing is like a tonic
cooperative groups help because they are comfort
zones
What do you think about journaling?
5
The first demo lesson was presented by Delia on
Fostering a Love for Writing through Poetry.
Before starting her demo lesson, Delia had us
move to new groups.
Pat got lost.
Delia carefully supervised the groups during the
lesson to make sure we wouldnt get off task (as
we often do).
6
Cristina presented her demo lesson on Classroom
Application of the Multiple Intelligence Theory,
while mom on the bottom right-hand corner proudly
looked on. Esa es mija!
Several groups presented during Cristinas theme
lesson on Birthdays and Angie F., feeling much
better, performed her rendition of a birthday
song as a candle.
During reflection of the Birthday activity ,Chris
said these few words about group bonding, Its
easy to work with a group of intelligent people.
7
We left for lunch a whole six minutes early.
Hurry up Angie S.! No tenemos tu tiempo!
After lunch, we had a Read Aloud for 30 minutes.
We were doing active listening by writing down
notes during the program Rural Voices
Radio-Border Writings.
We were then instructed to pick a prompt from the
notes we took during the Read Aloud.
8
Several people shared their writings ranging from
rituals and prejudices to being divided between
two countries.
Bertha also read her beautiful piece of living on
both sides of the river and wanted to elaborate
on how her children were made in México and the
U.S., but we assured her this was not necessary.
Our workshop ended with Dr. Garzas session on
Language in Thought and Action. He illustrated
from the abstract to the concrete using a ladder
and added that the theory is, you must be able
to go up and down this ladder to communicate.
We used our personal essays to practice writing
sensory impressions to reinforce an idea.
9
Dr. Garza continued explaining about moments
where you allow the reader to see the landscape
and that once you become scenic you must go
concrete.
He also went over the string of pearls effect
and how we reached inferences through experience
and we must allow the reader to go through the
same experience.
Who is your audience?
What am I trying to communicate to them?
Fin
Homework Read assigned chapters in Second
