  • The story takes place during World War II when
    the Nazis were taking the Jews to concentration
    camps and torturing and killing them.
  • The story is written from the perspective of a
    ten year old girl and what she went through
    during this time.
  • The characters in this book work secretly to help
    the Jews escape to the free country of Sweden,
    and almost get caught themselves.
  • There are many exciting moments in this book that
    make you hold your breath.

  • The Johansens are on the train and the Nazi
    soldiers ask if they are celebrating their New
    Year because it was the Jews New Year. I
    thought Kirstie was going to tell everything.

  • The Nazi soldiers come to Uncle Henricks house
    to look in the casket to view Aunt Berties body.
    There is no Aunt Bertie! What or who is in the
    casket?
