Epidemiologic Situation (1)
  • Three new cases were confirmed this week (P1).
  • One case from Upper Nile (date of onset,
    09/03/05)
  • One case from Sennar (date of onset, 11/03/05)
  • One case from Kassala (date of onset, 13/03/05)
  • The number of infected States are still 18
    States.
  • The total number of confirmed polio cases for
    2004 is 126.
  • 118 in north and 8 in south Sudan
  • 123 P1 cases and 3 P3 cases
  • The confirmed cases with onset in 2005 is 22
    cases.
  • North 18 P1 cases from
  • Kassala (5), Blue Nile (2), Bahr El Gabal (1),
    Gedarif (4) White Nile (1), Sennar (2), Unity (2)
    and Upper Nile(1)
  • South 4 P1 cases from
  • Upper Nile (Unity)
  • In 2005 the virus circulation is concentrated in
upper Nile region in South Sudan and in the
eastern areas of the country (bordering Eritrea
    and Ethiopia).
  • No isolates pending ITD from North or South.

8
Epidemiologic Situation (2)
  • The last case in Kassala is from Hamshkoreib an
area under NDA control very close to Eritrea. The
child is 5 years old and did not receive any
vaccination as this area is not properly accessed
    during SIAs.
  • The circulation in Kassala is concentrated among
Rashaida community who have close contact and
continuous movement with Arabian Peninsula (Saudi
Arabia) and Eritrea. This tribe is also connected
with some areas in Red Sea (Sawaken) and this is
the probable route of the virus from Red Sea to
    Kassala
  • The circulation in Gedaref State is probably
    related to Sennar State.
  • There is close contact and trade between Galabat
(an area that had 2 cases) in Gedaref and
    Ethiopia (El Matama, Amhara)
  • Upper Nile case is 10 years old (Zero dose)
  • Sennar case received 6 OPV doses and is 30
    months old
