  • Assessments and Accountability

2
GOALS OF THE NEW SYSTEM
  • Elevate the importance of writing throughout the
    curriculum
  • Replace the current writing assessments with a
    PreK-12 writing assessment system.
  • Year-long writing instruction (implementing
writing process) delivered across all content
areas and grades for different types of writing
    tasks/assignments.

3
NC WRITING ASSESSMENT PARTICIPANTS
  • 2008-2009 state mandates that all 4th and 7th
    graders participate.
  • All EXTEND2 students will be included in this
    assessment.

SCORING

BLIND REVIEW PROCESS
  • Teachers will score their own students completed
    writing.
  • Scores will be recorded on a Student Writing
Score Sheet which will be provided by the
    Instruction Department.
  • Upon completion, teachers will pass the students
completed writing to a second scorer without
    revealing their assigned scores.
  • A second teacher/scorer will assess the papers
and record the scores on a new Student Writing
    Score Sheet.
  • Each teacher/scorer will use the score sheets to
individually enter the scores in the computer.
(Information regarding data entry will be
provided through the Testing Department and your
    testing coordinator.)
  • After scores have been entered in the computer,
both Student Writing Score Sheets will be
returned to the homeroom teacher (person who
maintains accountability folders) along with the
    students completed paper.
  • The forms will be stapled to the front of the
students work and placed in a writing folder
that will remain in the Student Accountability
    Folder.

SCORING TIMELINE
  • IMPORTANT NOTE The window for scoring and
entering data is two weeks. However, ALL
information must be in the computer by the
deadline. To allow time for troubleshooting,
please do NOT wait until the last day of the
scoring window to begin entering data.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • NCDPI has established online professional
development for teachers to introduce strategies
for writing across the curriculum and scoring
    techniques.
  • This online professional development is referred
to as a moodle. This is an acronym for
  • Modular
  • Object
  • Oriented
  • Dynamic
  • Learning
  • Environment

15
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • Moodle is online and available 24/7.
  • Schools may choose
  • To complete together in a meeting (recommended
    by NCDPI) OR
  • Allow teachers to complete independently.
  • Again, all 4th and 7th grade teachers must
complete PD due to the fact that all will
    participate in instruction, assessment, and
    evaluation.

16
MOODLE PARTICIPANTS
  • 4th and 7th grade teachers are required to
complete both courses of the moodle by January
    30, 2009.
  • NCDPI recommends that all teachers/stakeholders
complete the moodle. (The moodle will no longer
be available after June 15, 2009.
  • Principals may require that all staff members
    participate in the moodle.
  • On-line journal and certificate of completion
will be submitted to the Professional Learning
Department for credit to be awarded.
  • Upon completion, teachers will receive 1.0
    reading CEUs.
  • To receive credit, follow procedures to apply for
    an outside course.

17
ACCOUNTABILITY
  • DPI Testing and Accountability Department has
    created an Administrators Guide.
  • Test coordinators will be trained and then share
    information with schools.
  • Proctors are required for both on-demand writing
    tasks/assignments.
  • Test coordinators will help to develop an
assessment schedule to include accommodations at
    their schools.
  • Accountability and TSS are working together to
establish procedures for using technology in the
    middle schools.
