Yasmin Lawsuit
Yasmin is a birth control pill that works by
preventing an egg from leaving the ovary and by
stopping sperm from reaching the uterus. It was
first introduced in 2001 by Bayer HealthCare
Pharmaceuticals. By early 2012, a Yasmin lawsuit
by the thousands had been filed against Bayer,
charging that the drug, along with Yaz, which is
another Bayer birth control pill, increased a
woman's risk of blood clots (deep vein
thrombosis) as well as gallbladder problems. Yaz
was marketed as a "miracle drug' when it appeared
in 2008, but it has also been reported as
carrying higher risks for blood clots. A Yasmin
lawsuit claims that Bayer did not adequately
inform potential users of these risks.
Both Yasmin and Yaz have a synthetic hormone
called dropirenone, not part of most other
birth control forms. The hormone has been
found to increase potassium levels, which
can cause the formation of blood clots and
lead to circulation blockage. Oral
contraceptives work by, in a sense, ignoring the
woman's normal menstrual cycle. In a normal
cycle after ovulation (releasing the egg
from the ovary) has occurred, the hormones
prepare the womb lining for pregnancy. That does
not occur if the egg has not been fertilized.
Yasmin makes the body think ovulation has
happened and pregnancy does not take place.
This birth control pill is taken once a day
for 21 days and then stopped for seven days.
Women placed on birth control with Yasmin are
generally given warnings before starting the
drug. Some warnings include
Yasmin is not protection against sexually
transmitted diseases.
Breakthrough bleeding or missing periods may
occur.
There is a risk of a blood clot in the leg or
lungs or an artery. The risk is greater in
smokers. Women are advised to discuss this risk
with their doctors.
There is a small increase in the risk of breast
cancer.
Any type of severe pain after taking the pill

pain in the upper right side of the stomach
Despite each Yasmin lawsuit, the Food and Drug
Administration voted to keep Yasmin on the
market n March 2012. Some of the studies
concerning these drugs have been conflicting.
A study from 2011 in the British Medical Journal
said that the risks of blood clots while taking
Yaz were twice that of earlier drugs. An FDA
study of Yasmin found about a 1.5 increase in
the chance of blood clots than in birth control
medicines not containing the drospironone
hormone.
Despite the warnings and the studies that link
Yasmin to possible serious side effects, the
drug is still on the market today. That may put
