The Nature of Graduate Study
  • Different from most previous educational
    experiences.
  • Requires more self-direction.
  • Challenging and intellectually rewarding.
  • Little time to waste if you dont know and you
    cant figure it out, ASK!
  • May have to manage a large-scale project (e.g.,
    thesis or dissertation).

  • Choose an adviser if one has not yet been
    assigned.
  • Define a course/program of study.
  • Seek to develop expertise in your field.
  • If there is any chance youll teach at the
    university level in the future, be looking to
    develop teaching skills.

Honor Code
  • All incoming JMU students, including graduate
    students, are required complete an online
    tutorial containing information about the JMU
    Honor Code and Honor Council. Students must then
    take a web-based test on the material at their
    convenience from any location. The test must be
    completed by the end of the student's first
    semester at JMU. The Honor Code Tutorial video,

FLEX ACCOUNTS
  • Use FLEX on and off campus
  • On Campus uses Dining locations, Bookstore,
    Copy Centers, Mr. Chips, Forbes Center, Health
    Center, JMU Post Office, Vending machines,
    Library, Computer labs, University Recreation
    Center, Parking Services, and Concessions Stands.
  • Off Campus Uses Use Flex at over 50 locations
    off campus from restaurants, grocery stores, and
    many more. For a current listing of all the

Meal Plans/Dining Dollars
  • Registered students may purchase a meal plan.
  • There are several plans to choose from. They
    range from the Block 50 to the 19 per week.
  • Punches may be used at most of the dining
    locations on campusexclusions are Chic-Fil-A and
    Einsteins Bagels.
  • Dining Dollars is the part of the meal plan that
    may be used for all dining locations and also
    includes vending machines and food at Mr. Chips.
  • Purchase a meal plan by phone, fax, online, mail,
    or come by our office located in Warren Hall.

Dining Dollars Gold
  • Dining Dollars Gold may be used in place of a
    meal plan or if you run out of Dining Dollars.
  • It is accepted at all on campus dining locations
  • Receive a 5 discount on food
  • Save 11 on sales tax
  • Balances carry over from year to year as long as
    you are a student.
  • Add funds by phone, fax, online, mail, or come by
    our office located in Warren.

Lost or Stolen Card
  • Lost or stolen cards should be reported
    immediately either to Card Services, Warren Hall
    (540) 568-6446, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5
    p.m. During other hours, report lost cards to
    Campus Police in Anthony Seeger Hall or online at
    www.jmu.edu/cardctr to have the card deactivated
    immediately.

Mission Statement Requirements
  • To enhance student learning and meet
    departmental student employment needs by
    providing meaningful work experiences.
  • Student Employment provides the following
  • Working on campus helps develop a sense of
    community belonging
  • Establishes a work record learn fundamental
    skills of employment (punctuality, communication)
  • Gain preparation for the world of work
    (interviewing employment process, training,
    supervision)
  • Requirements for Student Employment for Graduate
    Students
  • Must be degree seeking enrolled at least ½ time
    (5 credits ) during the academic year (fall and
    spring semesters).
  • Student employees cannot exceed 20 hours a week.
    The only exception is during university breaks
    and during the summer. Students can work in
    multiple positions as long as they do not exceed
    20 hours per week.

Comparison of JMUs Student Employment Programs
Federal Work Study (FWS) Institutional Employment (IE) Part-time Off-Campus
Offered through Financial Aid. Eligibility for this need-based program determined by results of FAFSA. Non-need based. Any student can work in these positions. Designed to assist students in securing part-time OFF campus employment.
Wages of FWS funded at 75 by the federal government and 25 by JMU Can be on or off-campus. Off-campus through Community Service Learning or America Reads. On-campus Examples UREC, parking services, admin. academic offices, computer labs, etc. Non-need based. Any student can work in these positions. Examples RMH Wellness Center, Rosetta Stone, Retail, law offices, child care, food service, etc.
Minimum pay is the federal minimum wage of 7.25/hr. The standard FWS award for 2013-2014 is 2030 Pay range 7.25-14.00/hr depending on position. Pay varies depending on off-campus employer.
