Gothic Architecture

History
  • The Gothic period later followed the Romans in
    the 13th century.
  • People of that time wanted the Cathedrals to be
brighter and more majestic and get away from the
    darkness of the Romanesque Period.
  • To get this appearance some new architectural
    systems needed to be invented.
  • The Gothic period introduced pointed arches,
    ribbed vaults and flying buttresses.
  • The Gothic period also introduced stain glass
windows that helped bring light into the
    buildings.

Why the different style?
  • Gothic structures were used for religious
purposes and used a lot of symbolism.
  • The pointed arches created mans eyes to follow up
    towards to heavens.
  • Ribbed vaults allowed structures to be open, high
    and spacious.
  • Flying buttresses provided support so that glass
could be in place of arches and other supports.
  • The Gothic style offered a warm feeling compared
    to previous structures.
