Purpose of this lesson

  • 1. How are safety signs so important in our
    lives?
  • 2. How would the world be different if we didnt
    have any safety signs?
  • Unit Questions
  • 1. How would you feel if the stop sign was not
    red but purple?
  • 2. What are the 3 things you do in a fire?
  • 3. Who invented the traffic light?

4
Objectives of this unit
  • Children will learn about the meaning of
    different signs in their community.
  • How important it is that we pay attention and
    follow these signs.
  • What to do in case of a fire.
  • How to prevent fires from happening.

5
Traffic signs
  • Garrett Augustus Morgan invented the traffic
    light.
  • Red- stop
  • Yellow- slow down
  • Green- go
  • Used to control traffic on the streets especially
in neighborhoods where there are children at play.

6
Traffic signs cont.
  • These two signs mean the same thing. Do not cross
the street because it can be very dangerous!
  • If you see these signs then it means it is ok for
    you to cross the street.

7
Fire Safety
  • All you have to do is follow these 3 simple
rules to prevent from getting burned in a fire
  • STOP where you are. Dont run because this will
    only make the fire worse.
  • DROP to your knees and then to the ground.
  • ROLL over and over or from side to side, covering
your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands, if
possible, rolling until youre sure the fire is
out. This will help the flames go away.

8
Prevent fires from happening
  • Never place anything over a lamp, like clothes,
    towels, or blankets.
  • Never cook alone, make sure the handle is not
facing out because someone could bump into it.
  • Make sure your smoke alarm is working and has new
    batteries.
  • Be sure to have a plan to escape in case of a
    fire.
  • Dont waste time trying to get your favorite toys
    during a fire.

9
Activities
  • Some activities include
  • A game that you will have to find the correct way
to get out of the house during a fire.
  • A matching game
  • View the meaning of signs colors.
  • A group project- finding a new sign and present
    to the class.
