History

• Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in
  1981, this sight is now over 6000 years old. This
  historic site shows insight into the lives of the
  native plains people. By herding buffalo over the
  edge of a cliff, the natives were able to
  quickly and efficiently hunt.

Why is it a World Heritage Sight?

• Is a magnificent testimony to Prehistoric Life
• Shows the ancient customs of the Plains People.
• Shows the great understanding of buffalo behavior
• By creating such a trap it shows the intelligence
  of the Plains People.

• Sunday at the Jump (Feb 19th - April 9th)
• Every Sunday there is a different activity
  related to the life of the Blackfoot/plains
  culture. Activities include making your own
  moccasins, or learning how to fry pemmican, along
  with many other activities as well.

• Alberta enjoys hot dry summers between May and
  September
• The rest of the year the weather is cold with
  snowy winters. However Chinook winds bring

Location

• Head-Smashed-In is located 18 kms north west of
  Fort Macleod on Highway 785. Directions from
  CalgaryHead south of city limits on Macleod
  Trail or Deerfoot Trail and continue south on Hwy
  2 for approximately 160 km until you see the
  signs for Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and
  Highway 785 West. The turnoff for Hwy 785 West is
  approximately 1 km north of the major
  intersection with Hwy 3. If you cross the Old Man
  River you have missed the turnoff and gone too
  far south!
