Title: Classification of Electrocardiogram (ECG) Waveforms for the Detection of Cardiac Problems

1
Classification of Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Waveforms for the Detection of Cardiac Problems
  • By Enda Moloney

2
Outline
  • Overview of project
  • ECG waveform
  • Goals
  • Health and Safety
  • Conclusion

3
Overview of Project
  • Design of a computer-based system for the
processing and classification of ECG waveforms
  • Help with the detection of abnormalities, eg
    cardiac problems
  • The aim of this to help Doctors so patients can
be referred to a specialist earlier

4
Heart
5
ECG Waveform
  • Electrical signal spreads
  • from the right atrium to the
  • left atrium, this is a P wave
  • on the diagram. This has
  • been known to show
  • atrium enlargement

6
ECG waveform
  • The QRS complex corresponds to depolarization of
    ventricles
  • Need Matlab and Fourier Analysis to develop
    algorithm for QRS

7
T Wave
  • The T wave represents the recovery of the
    ventricles
  • Inverted T wave can be a sign of coronary problems

8
Heart
9
Goals
  • 3-Nov-08
  • Have Matlab extracting ECG waveform, develop a
algorithm to detect the QRS complex
  • 24-Nov-08
  • Have Implement a neural network and integrate
with the Front End Processor. Verity using the
    MIT-BIH database
  • 12-Jan-09
  • Transfer the ECG system from Matlab to C, as a
    real-time Implementation. The neural network
    needs to be in C.

10
Goals
  • 9-Feb-09
  • Develop hardware circuit to interact with the
software, thus a circuit that has a ECG sensor
  • 9-Mar-09
  • Investigate possible extensions of the system.
Eg. Web-based database system that could be used
    story cardiology records and analysis

11
Health and Safety
  • Design of electronic circuits
  • Hardware/software conflicts
  • Testing of human subjects need approval

12
Conclusion
  • The project links biology, computers and
    engineering electronics
  • This could be very useful in the medical field
