Title: Poaching

1
Poaching
  • Poaching is one of the main threats to survival
of Amur tiger and other rare and endangered
    species of Primorye.
  • It is caused by huge demand and market for tiger
and other wildlife parts mainly in neighboring
China, and widespread corruption in Russian law
    enforcement agencies (e.g., among police
officers, border guards, custom officers, etc)
and difficult economic situation in Russia.
  • With state authorities closing their eyes to
wildlife crimes, illegally harvested wood is
easily legalized and transported to China, and
bear paws, gall bladders, musk and other valuable
biological stimulants of animal origin are sold
through black holes in the Russian-Chinese
    border.

2
Our projects
  • Environmental law enforcement and habitat
protection (anti-poaching teams of the state and
public rangers who operate in Amur tiger and Amur
    leopard habitats)
  • Conflict tiger cases resolution
  • Compensation of damage for cattle killed by
leopards and tigers in Khasan district
  • Environmental education and outreach
  • Monitoring of oil and gas projects in Primorye.

3
Law enforcement anti-poaching units
  • Phoenix supports teams of inspectors who conduct
regular patrols in Primorsky and south
    Khabarovsky regions. They are
  • 14 law enforcement teams of Hunting Management
    Department,
  • anti-poaching teams of Udege Legend national
park, Kedrovaya Pad and Lazovsky nature reserves.

4
Conflict tiger cases resolution
An emergency response team was formed within
Inspection Tiger in 2000 to investigate, solve,
and prevent human-tiger conflicts.
Depending on circumstances, investigation of a
particular situation usually suggests involving
scientists, nature reserves staff, Forest and
Hunting Departments experts, law-enforcement
officers, environmental committees regional
branches Phoenix supports it with equipment and
covers field and fuel expenses.
5
Compensation project
Since 1999, with support from international
charities, Phoenix has been paying compensation
to farmers for cattle killed by leopards and
tigers, in order to secure peaceful coexistence
of people and predators and discourage the former
from taking revenge
