Title: Symbols, Welding and Piping

1
Symbols, Welding and Piping
2
Symbols
  • Links are drawn in schematic form on technical
drawings and for engineering design analysis.
  • This figure shows the schematic symbols used for
    linkage drawings.
  • With CAD, these symbols can be drawn once, placed
in a symbols library, then used on many drawings.

3
What is welding
  • Welding is a process used to join metals by the
application of heat. Fusion welding, which
includes gas, arc, and resistance welding,
requires that the parent metals be melted.

4
Welding Drawing
  • Welding drawing is a detailed multiview drawing
of all the parts assembled, with accompanying
    welding symbols.

5
Weld Symbols
  • AWS and ANSI have standardized the weld symbols
used to describe welds on technical drawing. The
    weld symbol completely describes the
specifications for welding a joint, and a bent
line with an arrow at the end points at the joint
    to be welded.

6
The eight basic parts to a complete weld symbol
are
  • Reference line
  • Leader line and arrow
  • Basic weld symbol (location/depth of weld)
  • Finish symbol
  • Weld symbol (type of weld)
  • Dimensions
  • Supplementary symbols
  • Tail and specifications

7
The structure of the welding symbol
8
What is piping
  • Piping is a thin strip of covered cord used to
    edge hems.

9
Piping Drawings
  • Piping drawings are used in the design and
construction of oil refineries, chemical plants,
    tank farms, and other applications.
  • With CAD, it is possible to create a virtual
model of the process plant in the computer.

10
Pipe Drawings
  • Pipe drawings are 2-D representations of piping
systems. Such drawing use graphic symbols for the
design, construction, and maintenance of process
    systems.

11
Piping
  • Double-line drawings represent pipes as two
parallel, solid black lines. Double-line drawings
take more time but are much more realistic
    looking than single-line drawings.
