Title: The Communist Manifesto

1
The Communist Manifesto
  • Analysis and review
  • Chapter II

2
Chapter II tone and purpose
  • a) What is the tone of this chapter? Is it
    different from Chapter I?
  • b) Who is it directed at?
  • c) What is its purpose?
  • d) Do you think the arguments are well-reasoned?
    Why/why not?

3
Chapter II the 10-point policy
  • 2. a) What do you think of the 10-point policy?
  • b) Which points are radical, which are
    conservative?
  • c) Are any of the points implemented in your
    country?
  • d) What does this say about communism/this
    document?

4
Chapter II - evaluation
  • 3. Do you think communism is a desirable ideal, a
foolish dream, an undesirable ideal, or something
    else?

5
Chapter II further question
  • 4. Look closely at the last paragraphs (When, in
the course of development, class distinctions
have disappeared in which the free development
of each is the condition for the free development
of all.). In contemporary scholarship these are
considered some of the most controversial points
in the whole Manifesto. Can you identify why?

6
Chapter III
  • This chapter reviews the socialist literature
present in the mid-1800s and offers reasons why
    the Communist Manifesto is significantly
different and more important. It is very
outdated now and because of this we will not
    study it in detail.

7
Chapter IV
  • This chapter considers the condition of
communism in various countries in Europe and
finishes with the words Working Men Of All
Countries Unite!, the rallying call of
communists. This is intended to be the call to
action for those faithful to the communist cause.
