Title: Genetically Modified Foods

1
Genetically Modified Foods
  • Created by
  • Sara Williams

2
What are GMOs?
  • A GMO, a Genetically Modified Organism, is a
man-made organism created in a laboratory and
patented by a corporation or the USDA. GMOs are
created by a process called genetic
    engineering.
  • These plants have been modified in the laboratory
to enhance desired traits such as increased
resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional
    content.
  • Genetic engineering - the manipulation of an
organism's genetic endowment by introducing or
    eliminating specific genes through modern
    molecular biology techniques.

Health Concerns
  • Allergy concerns
  • More than 90 of food allergies occur in response
to specific proteins in milk, eggs, wheat, fish,
tree nuts, peanuts, soybeans, and shellfish
  • Lectin (3 types)
  • - Lectin plays a part in pesticide resistance,
but also destroys the small intestines in humans
  • PHA - the kidney bean lectin with a well
    documented detrimental impact on intestinal
    structure
  • ConA - the lectin obtained from the jack bean and
    toxic to soil-borne nematodes.
  • (c) GNA - the snowdrop lectin, known to have
    insecticidal properties but considered less
likely than the other two selected lectins to
produce harmful effects in humans on the basis of
    previous feeding, histological and
    microbiological studies in rodents.

4
Our Environment
  • Toxicity to the soil
  • Increased amount of super weeds and super trees
  • The killing of beneficial insects
  • Farming
  • Losing originality of seeds
  • Less Diversity, Quality, Quantity and Profit

5
Animal Abuse
  • no genetically modified animals have yet been
used in commercial agriculture anywhere in the
    world.
  • Increased damage in farm animals digestive
systems from grass and super pests

6
Political, Social, Economic Threats
  • Monopolization of Food Production
  • Impact on Long -Term Food Supply
  • Bio-colonization
  • Religious Dietary Reasons

7
The five countries producing more than 95 of
commercialized GMO Other country producing
commercialized GMO orange dot Only experimental
crops
8
Pros of GMOs
  • Pest resistance
  • Herbicide tolerance
  • Cold tolerance
  • Nutrients
  • Drought/Salinity tolerance
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Replacement of Pectin

FDA Insight
  • The current FDA policy was developed in 1992
(Federal Register Docket No. 92N-0139) and states
that agri-biotech companies may voluntarily ask
    the FDA for a consultation
  • Companies working to create new GM foods are not
required to consult the FDA, nor are they
required to follow the FDA's recommendations
    after the consultation.

11
Labeling
  • A conventionally grown banana would be 4011
  • An organic banana would be 94011
  • A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would
    be84011

12
Actions to Take
  • INDIVIDUAL ACTIONS
  • Contact elected officials
  • Sign petition
  • Vote
  • Join and volunteer to help activist organizations
  • Mobilize parents, students, and teachers
  • Attend Forums and Conferences
  • CONSUMER ACTIONS
  • Buy organics whenever possible
  • Communicate with Producers and Distributors
  • Contact Store Owners
  • Corporate Persuasion

13
  • "All things are connected like the blood which
unites one family. Whatever befalls the Earth
befalls the sons and daughters of the Earth."
