Title: Radioactivity

1
Radioactivity
2
Definitions
  • The radioactivity is the loss or profit of
    some particles.
  • The nuclear fission is the break of his core
    to give other smaller cores.
  • The nuclear fusion is the union of two small
  • atoms to give a major core.

3
Radiations alpha, thread and gamma
  • Alpha Particles formed by two protons and two
neutrons. They have positive charge, are emitted
to great speed but they have a very little
    capacity of penetration

4
Radiations alpha, beta and gamma
  • Beta are formed by electrons. It has positive
charge and it mass is very small. They have more
capacity of penetration than the particles alpha.

5
Radiations alpha, beta and gamma
  • Gamma neutral radiation, of the same type of the
light. It has great capacity of penetration. To
stop them we need thick plates of concrete.

6
Nuclear fission
  • In the actions that are realized in the nuclear
fission, there is liberated a great quantity of
energy, nuclear energy, which is taken advantage
    in the nuclear power stations
  • In the reaction of fission of the uranium
235 great quantity of energy is obtained and
there are liberated new neutrons that continue
    the process

7
Nuclear fusion
  • The nuclear fusion might be the employment as the
source of energy. It would have the advantage of
which radioactive residues do not happen though
it has the problem of which in order that the
merger of the cores happens the atoms must reach
too high temperatures and the technology to
    advance sufficiently for it.

Nuclear fusion is responsible for the brightness
of stars

USES OF RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES
  • taking into account the processes
experienced by radioactive isotopes, we can
    identify three main applications
  • At an energy source at nuclear power stations.
  • At scientific research and experiments with
alpha beta and gamma radiation to determine the
age, and detect waste of ammunition to find out
    which transforms the substance.
  • At medicine to diagnose disease and to cure some
    cancers

9
Radioactive waste
  • Radioactive waste have two fundamental
    characteristics
  • They are very dangerous. Small quantities of
residue can emit dangerous radiation for the
    human health.

thousands of years will be late in stopping
performing harmful to the health
They qualify in residues of fall, average and
high activity
Fall and average approximately 300 years stop
being dangerous
HighThey are very lasting. Some of them
continue emitting radiation during thousands of
years
