What Are Eating Disorders?

• Any of several disorders in which abnormal
  feeding habits are associated with psychological
  factors
• Eating disorders develop throughout ones
  lifetime and can dangerously harm ones body.

Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa

• Are the two main eating disorders
• Are the most diagnosed of the eating disorders
• Affect both men and women
• Are associated with extensive physical
  consequence, including early mortality

Bulimia Nervosa

• An eating disorder in which the subject binge
  eats
• Behavior consists of
• - rapid food consumption
• - bizarre mixing of ingredients
• - eating in secrecy

Anorexia Nervosa

• Disorder in which an individual goes though a
  period of self-starvation
• Individuals choose not to eat at all or eat the
  smallest amount possible

• Low self-esteem
• Negatively compares his/herself to others
• Negative body image
• Changes in character
• - lying, stealing, keeping secrets
• Depression

• Insomnia or excessive sleeping
• Dramatic weight loss in a short period of time
• Obsession with continuous exercise

• Use of diet pills, laxatives, and diuretics
• Dizziness and headaches
• Vague or secretive eating patterns
