Title: Dear Ann Landers, Ive heard that there is a group of Streptococcus that is the top cause of lifethre

1
Dear Ann Landers, Ive heard that there is a
group of Streptococcus that is the top cause of
life-threatening infections in newborns and that
as many as 35 of healthy women carry this
bacteria in their vagina. Approximately 15,000
neonates are affected annually. It is the primary
cause of neonate pneumonia. The infant may
develop septicemia or meningitis, half of these
die, ½ survive with neurological problems. This
is why it is important to check pregnant women
for this microbe with a vaginal swab. I also
understand that it causes bovine mastitis. What

Dear Ann Landers, I have heard that these
groups of Strep. are typically found in/on other
animals but on rare occasion can cause human
infections. They have been isolated from
impetiginous lesions, abscesses, sputum and the
pharynx. What groups of Strep. are
they? Signed,Overworked Microbiology

Dear Ann Landers, I understand that this group
of Strep. is normal flora of the pharynx in
25-60 of the population. Its typical
microscopic arrangement is diplococci. It is
transmitted by droplet and is frequently
secondary to damage to the respiratory tract,
allergy, or general lowered host resistance. Two
million Americans contract the infection caused
by this m/o per year. What group of Strep. is
it? Signed,Overworked Microbiology StudentAnn

Dear Ann Landers, I have heard that this group
of Strep. is typically found in the lower
intestine, but can be found on food products that
have not been fecally contaminated. I have also
read that it may live in the pharynx for a short
period of time (What is that called again?).
Even though these microbes are classified as a
group of Strep., they belong to a different
genus. They may be associated with bacterial
endocarditis (20 of the cases) and UTI (10 of
the cases). What group of Strep. is
it? Signed,Overworked Microbiology StudentAnn

Dear Ann Landers, I have heard that this group
of Strep. is typically found in the mouth and
throat. Two species within this group are
associated with dental caries and form dental
plaque. The microbes in this group are the most
frequent cause of subacute bacterial
endocarditis. What group of Strep. is
it? Signed,Overworked Microbiology StudentAnn

Dear Ann Landers, I have heard that this group
of Strep. is typically found in the upper
digestive tract of humans, cows, and sheep. It
can cause UTI, subacute endocarditis, and
meningitis. The most common species in this
group is named after an ox or cow What group
of Strep. is it? Signed,Overworked Microbiology

Dear Ann Landers, I have heard that this group
of Strep. is the cause of Strep throat It can
be found in the throat and anus of carriers and
is transmitted by droplet. I have heard that the
most virulent microbes in this group are
surrounded by a mucoid capsule. This m/o
contains a number of virulence factors including
exotoxins that cause fever. This m/o is also
associated with rhuematic fever and scarlet
fever. What groups of Strep. is
it? Signed,Overworked Microbiology StudentAnn
